Just as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill braved the seas on the HMS Duke of York to visit and personally thank President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at the height of World War II, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky flew to Washington DC to visit and personally thanks President Joe Biden and the American people for their immense support of his country.
Barely a day after visiting soldiers on the battlefield in the eastern part of Ukraine, Zelensky was in the White House press conference with his host to answer questions directly from the media on his first trip outside his country since the Russian invasion.
Zelensky will later address a joint session of the United States Congress in person having done so via video in the past.
At a brief White House event where Biden formally welcomed him, Zelensky presented Biden a gift from a Captain of the Ukrainian military from the field to express the military’s appreciation to his leadership.
At their joint press conference, Biden announced $1.8 billion in military package including the much anticipated Patriot missiles for Ukraine to enable it to defend itself against Russia’s air raid targeting power infrastructure.
Biden also promised to sign a $45 billion omnibus bill that congress has passed to help Ukraine to sustain its defense against Russia.
