Angola awakens on World Environment Day to an earthquake, mainly affecting provinces in the south.

A magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck west of Caconda, Huila Province, on June 5. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The epicenter was approximately 87 km west of Caconda, and the quake occurred at a depth of about 10 km. While light shaking may have been felt across western and southwestern Angola, significant damage is unlikely.

Authorities are conducting assessments, and minor disruptions to transportation and utilities may occur in affected areas.

Additionally, the Geophysics Division of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET) reports a magnitude-5.4 earthquake in Bie Province, with damages reported.

At some educational institutions, a small number of students fainted during the earthquake while they were in the classrooms. Others rushed out onto the streets, running from one side to another
