Opportunity for Africans: 2021 Hult Prize Challenge on Food For Good (US$1 Million in Seed Capital)

This opportunity is for you! Do not miss it

The 2021 Hult Prize Challenge will create jobs, stimulate economies, reimagine supply chains and improve outcomes for 10,000,000 people by 2030. Food defines the human experience. Family dinners, religious feasts, quick snacks eaten during breaks at work, and our many other relationships with food combine to shape our bodies, our minds, our communities, and the world we call home. Food is the ultimate equalizer.

Yet increasingly over recent decades, food systems have become machines of extraction that reduce our well-being, weaken communities, and impoverish the world around us. Once celebrated as pillars of society, community and the economy, today’s grocery stores and kiranas alike paint a dismal picture. Store aisles are filled with arsenals of cheap, addictive products that attack the soul through the hollowness of manufactured consumption. Even street vendors peddle what has become a legalized weapon of mass destruction. Parents wage a daily battle to nourish and nurture their children, while supply chains funnel massive profits to corporations and billionaires.

In 2021, the Hult Prize returns to the roots of the human experience - food. We are challenging you to transform food from a necessity for survival into a vehicle of change and prosperity for humanity. In order to do this, you will have to understand how our existing food systems work, and why they are failing humanity on a global scale. The good news is that you will have many examples from which you can draw inspirations—a veritable army of pioneers who are rethinking food for a better world. Your work will be drawn from these inspirations to build viable companies that will fundamentally change how we all think about food and food systems in the next decade and beyond.

Thomas Partey: Arsenal complete £45m deal for Atletico Madrid midfielder

Arsenal have signed Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid on a long-term deal after paying his 50m euros (£45.3m) release clause.

Atlético Madrid to sell Partey and three others to survive coronavirus crisis

The 27-year-old Ghana midfielder made 35 league appearances and scored three goals for Diego Simeone’s side as they finished third in La Liga last season.

He played 188 times for Atletico after joining the club in 2011.

Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira, 24, has moved in the opposite direction and joined the La Liga.

Arsenal have been linked with Partey, who has 29 international caps, throughout the summer transfer window.

Partey won the 2017-18 Europa League and 2018 Super Cup with Atletico and signed a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano in 2018, until the end of June 2023.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high-quality player to our squad.

“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”

Arsenal were also interested in Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, 22 – however Aouar told French TV earlier on Monday’s deadline day that he would definitely remain at the Ligue 1 club.

Torreira – who joined Arsenal from Sampdoria for £26m in July 2018 and has made 89 appearances for the Gunners – moves to Madrid on a season-long loan.

Arsenal had already added Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes for 26m euros (£23.14m) from Lille, former Chelsea forward Willian on a free transfer and re-signed Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid during the summer window.

The Premier League side’s French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, 21, has secured a loan move to Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

Arteta’s side have won three of their opening four Premier League games as they look to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish.

‘Partey signing is a massive statement’

Analysis by former Premier League defender Micah Richards

Thomas Partey – what a signing. I cannot believe there are not more clubs lining up for him.

He is so good. A lot of people just think about him defensively, but he has actually got quite a bit going forward.

He has scored goals for the national team and a few for Atletico Madrid as well. It is a massive deal for them and a massive statement.

‘He has a lot to offer’

Analysis by La Liga TV presenter Semra Hunter

Thomas Partey has a lot to offer. He has been one of the best players at Atletico Madrid over the last two seasons.

He was key for them in their Champions League campaign.

He is someone who is very good at protecting the defence but is also very good at going forward. He is an excellent passer of the ball. He is great when it comes to ball recovery and pressing up the pitch.
