Pride - Embrancing diversity. LGBTQ in Angola. Day 3

Despite major changes in laws and norms surrounding the issue of same-sex marriage and the rights of LGBT people around the world, public opinion on the acceptance of homosexuality in society remains sharply divided by country, region and economic development.

Angola has decriminalized homosexuality. What's your opinion?

Good morning ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome everyone to the third day of our program. Today’s debate is a very interesting one, we have a man who not only rejects the LGBT community but also opposes the new government law that decriminalizes homosexuality.

According to the interview, we can conclude that religion, both as it relates to relative importance in people’s lives and actual religious affiliation, also plays a large role in perceptions of the acceptability of homosexuality in many societies across the globe.

TUC Calls For Total Overhaul Of Pension System

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, has called for a total overhaul of the current pension system to benefit the working majority in the country, as he says the current scheme is unfair to low-income earning workers.

According to him, only a few privileged individuals are being paid huge sums of money from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme every month, at the expense of ordinary workers who are contributing from their meagre salaries.

Dr. Baah says it is unfair for such a system to continue operating, hence it must be changed for the good of all workers.

“We are demanding a total overhaul of the pension system. The current system is unfair to many workers. A few privileged individuals are being paid huge sums of money from the SSNIT scheme every month, at the expense of ordinary workers who are contributing to the scheme from their meagre salaries,” he said during a press conference organised by the TUC on Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA) and the National Economic Situation.

He stated that the TUC and its member groups are ready to meet the authorities to properly put in place a better system that will benefit every worker.

On the IMF

Commenting on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme that the country is seeking, he said it will not solve the fundamental structural problems of the economy that is currently in place.

According to him, just like the previous programmes have always done, it will only prepare the country for another bailout to continue keeping them in business.

“IMF programmes will not deal with these fundamental structural issues. IMF programmes only prepare the country for the next bailout so that the IMF will continue to be in business,” he said.

Dr. Baah stated that the TUC is willing to lead the country’s working people in resisting any attempt to impose hardships on workers and the entire Ghanaian population. The TUC believes that IMF programmes and policies are completely separated from reality.

“We have already communicated our objections to the decision to seek an IMF bailout for the eighteenth time. We are convinced that an IMF programme will not solve our problems. It will only impose hardships on Ghanaians,” he stated.

Speaking on the economy and how best to grow it, the TUC boss said: “We insist that our main challenge in managing the economy has to do with corruption and failure – on the part of successive governments – to transform the economy’s structure so as to allow Ghanaians produce what we eat and eat what we produce”.

Although the TUC’s request for an increase in COLA has been granted after intense negotiations took place between Organised Labour and the respective ministries, it’s still calling on government to honour its promise to pay the lump-sum top-up to workers who retired in 2020 under the new pensions act, Act 766.

Concerning the Single Spine Salary Structure Review, Dr. Baah said: “The TUC and its affiliates have their eyes and minds firmly fixed on outcomes of the Single Spine Salary Review process currently underway. We are determined to work together with other Organised Labour groups to end the unfairness in remunerations for public sector workers on the Single Spine Salary Structure on one hand, and Article 71 office-holders and state-owned enterprises on the other hand”.

Dr. Baah however commended government for its timely intervention and positive attitude toward the negotiations that enabled the parties to reach a win-win deal. He also thanked all the unions and their members for the extraordinary display of unity that brought results.

Organised Labour led by the TUC reached an agreement with government for a 15 percent Cost of Living Allowance for all workers on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS), effective July 1, 2022. This agreement led to the strike being called off.

EU To Soften Sanctions On Russian Banks To Allow Food Trade

The European Union will amend its sanctions on Moscow today Wednesday by allowing the unfreezing of some funds of top Russian banks that may be required to ease bottlenecks in the global trade of food and fertilisers, a draft document showed.

The move comes amid criticism from African leaders about the negative impact of the sanctions on the trade, which may have exacerbated shortages chiefly caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its blockading of ports in the Black Sea.

Under the changed regulation, which is expected to be adopted by EU envoys today Wednesday, EU nations will be able to unfreeze previously blocked economic resources owned by top Russian lenders VTB (VTBR.MM), Sovcombank, Novikombank, Otkritie FC Bank, VEB, Promsvyazbank and Bank Rossiya, the document said.

Separately, under new sanctions to be adopted today Wednesday, Sberbank (SBER.MM), Russia’s largest bank, will also become subject to the freezing of its assets, with the exception of resources needed for food trade, an EU official told Reuters.

The draft document said money could be released “after having determined that such funds or economic resources are necessary for the purchase, import or transport of agricultural and food products, including wheat and fertilisers”.

Under the revised sanctions, the EU also plans to facilitate exports of food from Russian ports, which traders had stopped servicing after EU sanctions despite the measures explicitly exempting food exports, an official said. read more

The EU has so far denied its sanctions affected food trade.

The EU, along with the United States, Britain and others, imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. Russia calls its actions a “special military operation” to disarm and “denazify” Ukraine. Kyiv and the West say Moscow is waging an unprovoked war of aggression.

China Warns US of ‘Forceful Measures’ If House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Visits Taiwan

China has warned that it would take “resolute and forceful measures” if US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan.

Pelosi, who is second in line of succession to the US presidency, has reportedly outlined plans to take a delegation to Taipei in August, according to the Financial Times, and if she makes the visit it would be the highest-level delegation from the United States to the self-governing island in 25 years.

On Tuesday, July 19, China’s Foreign Ministry lashed out at the potential visit, saying it would “have a severe negative impact on the political foundation of China-US relations, and send a gravely wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

“If the US insists on going down the wrong path, China will definitely take resolute and forceful measures to firmly defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a news conference. “The United States must be fully responsible for all the consequences caused by this.”

Also, August 1 is the anniversary of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army.

Beijing’s ruling Communist Party has long claimed Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly vowed to “reunify” the island of 24 million people with the Chinese mainland by force if necessary despite having never governed the region in 70 years.

Pelosi had previously stated plans to lead a US congressional delegation to Taiwan in April, but the trip was postponed after she tested positive for Covid-19. At the time, China had strongly opposed the trip and issued similar warnings.

A visit by Pelosi would be the first by a sitting House Speaker since Republican Newt Gingrich traveled to Taiwan in 1997.

US officials and lawmakers have embarked on more than 20 trips to the democratically controlled island since the Taiwan Travel Act was signed into law by then US President Donald Trump in March 2018.

China, meanwhile, has sent record numbers of war planes near Taiwan, as tensions soared to their highest in recent decades.
