Angola registers three cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus

Angola registered, in the last eight months, three cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, at a time when Africa is about to declare the eradication of wild polio, announced last Tuesday, in Luanda, the secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda.

The official who spoke on the sidelines of the 70th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa clarified that these cases are derived from the vaccination itself, stressing that the country has not registered cases of wild polio since March 2011.

He explained that in circulating polio the vaccine is not an adverse effect after vaccination, nor does it depend on the quality of the vaccine, but rather an event that happens when there is low vaccination coverage against polio in the community.

In this regard, he made it known that from the 4th of this upcoming month of September, the second vaccination phase will start in the provinces of Namibe, Huambo, Zaire, Cunene and Cuando Cubango, which should have happened in the first quarter of the current year.

Franco Mufinda said that the video conference meeting, which Angola holds the position of rapporteur for Portuguese-speaking countries, is addressing two points, namely "response to covid-19 on the continent" and "eradication of wild polio in Africa ".

The official in charge of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Angola, Javier Aranburu, congratulated the continent and Angola in particular for the effort in the fight to eradicate polio and for the relevant policies against covid-19.

Teens killed by Angolan police enforcing virus curbs: Amnesty

At least seven killed as security forces used 'excessive, unlawful force' in tackling lockdown breaches, watchdog says.

Amnesty International has said Angolan security forces tasked with enforcing coronavirus restrictions killed at least seven young men, including minors, between May and July.

After a joint investigation with Angolan rights group OMUNGA, the UK-based watchdog said on Tuesday most of the victims were teenagers allegedly shot dead by police and army officers, who either fired at them directly or hit them accidentally.

"The stories we heard from relatives and eyewitnesses are harrowing," said Deprose Muchena, Amnesty's director for east and southern Africa.

"One teenage boy was shot in the face while he lay injured; another was killed when police fired on a group of friends practising at a sports field," he added.

The government in March declared a state of emergency and imposed restrictions to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. Soldiers were deployed to help police implement the new rules as people continued to mass at markets and water points - breaching curfews and gathering bans.

Security forces used "excessive and unlawful force" in dealing with coronavirus lockdown breaches, the watchdog said.

"The authorities have used emergency measures to impose arbitrary restrictions on human rights. Any use of force by security forces should be exceptional and must comply with the state's international human rights obligations," said Joao Malavindele, executive director of OMUNGA.

Toll likely 'much higher'

The youngest confirmed victim was a 14-year-old, said to have been accidentally killed in May when police fired into the air to disperse a crowd of people working on fishing boats, according to the investigation.

In June, a 15-year-old was allegedly shot in the back outside his aunt's house as police used firearms to disperse a street crowd.

Amnesty and OMUNGA said they had verified five other similar killings but believed the "true death toll" could be "much higher". They called for an independent and transparent' investigation into the deaths to bring perpetrators to justice.

There was no immediate comment by the Angolan police.

Most people in the country have failed to benefit from vast oil and mineral reserves that amassed wealth in the hands of a political elite.

For many, poverty and lack of access to basic services outweigh concerns about catching a disease that has so far infected 2,222 people and caused 100 deaths.

Coronavirus: South African students resume classes

South Africa’s students in all grades resume classes on Monday after weeks of closure because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Coronavirus: South African students resume classes

Final-year students had resumed classes earlier to prepare for examinations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa closed the schools in July after they were briefly reopened following a public outcry on rising virus cases.

Monday’s resumption of classes comes as the country registers a decline in new infections.

The health minister said the country was “over the surge”, adding that the “plateau has started”.

Last week, UN agencies asked African governments to reopen schools with measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The authorities in South Africa say they have prepared for safe resumption of learning starting this week.

WHO declares Africa free of polio

The World Health Organization has declared Africa free of naturally occurring polio. The continent’s last case was reported in northern Nigeria four years ago.

The announcement is a significant step in the 30-year-long campaign to eradicate the disease worldwide. Only Afghanistan and Pakistan have polio infections now. However, the coronavirus pandemic is interrupting vaccination efforts.

Angola has fertilizers for agricultural crop 2020/2021

Angolan minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Francisco de Assis, assured that there are fertilizers for the 2020/2021 agricultural campaign throughout the country, due to open next October.

Time to end the false debate of organic vs. mineral fertilizer | Devex

The minister said that the companies with financial and liquidity difficulties  in the local currency (kwanzas) received financing from the Angola’s Developemnt Bank (BDA) .

The funding enabled the beneficiaries to join a the Credit Saving Bank (BPC) line, where they obtained the foreign exchange for the import of fertilizers expected to arrive  in the country late September and early October.

On average, according to the minister, the country needs at least 60,000 tons / year and if that quantity is below that, it compromises the national agricultural production.

To avoid constraints that could reduce the supply of these charges, he said that the sector is working in two directions, the first being better organisation and integration of the private sector that imports.

In the second aspect, the focus is on seeking to create conditions that attracted private investors, both national and foreign, for the country to start producing the ferlizers internally.

As for the supply of fertilizers in the Angolan market, the businessman from the sector Manuel Monteiro informed that he had received a ship with 11,000 tons, which have already been distributed in the 18 provinces.

As part of the economic relief measures created by the government, Manuel Monteiro says that by November another 24,000 tons of fertilizers will arrive.
In addition to normal fertilizers, he said that nitrogen fertilizers are also insured, to be distributed to farmers and peasants across the country.

We want laws that protect us and are really applicable, we want public policies that bring respect of our humanity to debates and institutions. We want a society where we are not afraid of going out in the street! We will continue demanding a society where we have our freedom of being, of feeling, of walking and thinking how we want.

False alarm as faulty Chinese COVID-19 self test kits misdiagnose 3,700 in Sweden

Swedish Health officials are scrambling to trace other users of Chinese-made self-test COVID-19 kits after the device gave positive results all 3,700 people who used it. Upon further tests at the hospital, however, all 3,700 users tested negative.

Swedish Public Health Agency has therefore alerted international health authorities about the problem for the appropriate action and response to be take. Meanwhile the agency is putting together plans for all affected people to be contacted no later than Thursday says the Swedish health authorities.

The affected regions who came with the failed Covid-19 tests are, Blekinge, Dalarna, Gävleborg, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Västmanland. All those who have received incorrect positive coronavirus results will be contacted no later than Thursday, 27 August.

The agency said the PCR kits, which test for an ongoing COVID-19 infection, were made in China by the company BGI Genomics and had been distributed worldwide. In Sweden, the kits were used by people conducting at-home tests between period March and August, the agency said.

“The faulty test kit has been reported to the Swedish Medical Products Agency. It has been exported by China to many other countries,” the agency said, adding that it has “informed relevant authorities in Europe and the WHO”. Mostly, “people who had mild symptoms or who didn’t feel any symptoms at the time of the test received false positive results,” the agency said in a statement.

Sweden on Tuesday said it had 86,891 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and 5,814 deaths.
