The United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Commemoration of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary and Devex, are excited to announce the launch of an Essay Competition for the best essay by a young person on the topic ‘The Future We Want, The UN We Need’.

Requirements

Participants must be between the ages of 15 and 29.
Participants must have written the essay by themselves. Only individual entries are admitted, no teams are allowed to take part in the competition. 
Essays must answer the question by making a case, analysing the situation, and building a case based on researched arguments and facts. 
Essays may be submitted in English only.
Entries must be no longer than 800 words.

Named in honor of NED’s principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman Dante Fascell (D-Fl.), the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is a federally funded, international exchange program that offers democracy activists, journalists, civil society leaders, and scholars from around the world the opportunity to spend five months in residence at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington, D.C., in order to undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. Located within NED’s INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR DEMOCRATIC STUDIES, a leading center for analysis of global democratic developments, the program provides a collegial environment and rich intellectual setting for educational exchange and professional development.

Requirements

-Demonstrate proficiency in the English language
-Propose a project focusing on the political, social, economic, legal or cultural aspects of democratic development
-Be available to work in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C. during the 5 month fellowship period (October 1-February 28 or March 1-July 31). No other fellowships or jobs may be held at this time.

Benefits

Financial Support: Each fellow receives a monthly stipend for living expenses, plus basic health insurance and roundtrip travel to and from Washington, D.C., at the beginning and end of the fellowship period. Fellowship payments are calculated to cover cost of a short-term, furnished rental apartment, plus “cost of living” for food, local transportation, and other necessities. Fellows are provided with a fully equipped office, plus a limited budget for long-distance phone calls and professional travel within the United States.

The Open Internet for Democracy Leaders Program - a collaboration between the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA) - is a ten-month non-resident leadership program that empowers emerging leaders from across the globe to build their advocacy and organizing skills to protect internet freedom.

Benefits

The selected applicants will be a part of a larger international network where they can learn from peers and share their work. Open Internet Leaders will receive an honorarium of $1000 USD for completing their required activities, as well as travel and per diem covered for international trips (Note: Travel opportunities may change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If for any reason travel is not possible, CIPE, NDI, and CIMA, will explore ways for the Open Internet Leaders to participate in international fora through virtual conferencing platforms.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated interest or experience working on open internet issues, with preference given to those focused on media, private sector/entrepreneurship or civic/political participation
Experience in one or more of the following areas: policy, activism, research, or technical expertise
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in collaboration with colleagues across different time zones 
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Strong social media skills 
Fluency in written and spoken English 
Strong presentation skills
Ability to travel to two potential international conferences (locations TBD; costs covered; In-person participation in such events is contingent on health considerations related to the COVID-19 pandemic)

The African Union (AU), through the African Governance Architecture (AGA) Secretariat, in a joint project with the Common market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) have launched the “Democracy and Governance in Africa – Youth Innovation Challenge”. Youth innovators, innovation hubs and incubation centres across the continent, are invited to participate in the innovation challenge. The challenge calls for existing innovations that are making impact in the structural prevention of conflict through addressing issues of democracy deficit, lack of good governance and contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Requirements

The innovation should focus on Youth or innovation should be led by young person aged between 18-35; 
Innovators, Innovations, innovation hubs should be based in Africa; African diaspora are open to apply but innovation in focus should be focused or based in Africa; 
The submission should be based on an existing innovation (digital or non-digital) on or contributing to the following thematic areas;
Enhancing good governance; 
Promoting democracy; 
Citizen participation; 
Creating social cohesion; 
Supporting public service; 
Justice and rule of law; 
Promoting and protection of human rights; and 
Other relevant thematic areas that contribute to the AU theme of the year - Silencing the Guns. 
The idea or innovation should have been implemented/tested with a level of success/ impact but have room for improvement, replication or scale up at national, regional or continental level; 
Innovation must reflect the mainstreaming of women and gender equality; 
Female innovators are highly encouraged to apply.

The ICASA Graduate Development Programme is a twenty-four (24) months intensive development programme commencing in September 2020.
