Minneapolis City Council approves renaming street after George Floyd

The site where Floyd drew his last breath, at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, has since been transformed into a memorial site and maintained by volunteers.

“The name is intended to honor George Perry Floyd Jr., who was killed on May 25, 2020,” Minneapolis Director of Public Works Robin Hutcheson said in a land use application summary.”

The commemorative name addition will not affect addressing on the street. The signage to indicate the commemorative street naming will be placed at the intersection of 38th St E and Chicago Ave only,” Hutcheson said.

Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police contributed to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, with Floyd and other Black victims of police violence, like Breonna Taylor, becoming the faces of the movement.

Africa Educates Her Campaign is live in Angola

The coronavirus pandemic has severely affected the education sector in Africa, with mounting worries that it will take some time for many African countries to recover.

The disruptions are projected to end or seriously delay the education of 20 million secondary-school-age girls.

Girls in Angola are worried about falling behind or having to quit altogether, citing distractions at home and financial hits from the lockdowns.

For this reason, we are running our Africa Educates Her Campaign in order to bring girls back to school.

Our today's guest is Deolinda she will share her experiences during lockdowns.

Deolinda says that her academic development has slowed a lot, she feels the need to attend school. The covid-19 affected her negatively.

She recommends that government officials create conditions of social distance and offer bio-security materials in schools.

I particularly know this girl, during the pandemic she was forced to look for a job to help her family during this difficult time. She spends all day washing dishes and serving customers in a small restaurant near her house.

The poor girl doesn't even have time to study at home.

MPLA in Luanda wants unity and organization

The ruling MPLA party in Luanda wants unity of all militants and a better organisation to face current and future challenges, according to its first secretary Joana Lina.

MPLA denies interference with Constitutional Court and considers Chivukuvuku's accusations "unfounded" - Ver Angola - Daily, the best of Angola

Joana Lina, who was speaking this Saturday during a field visit of the executive committee of the party's provincial committee to several members of action committees in the municipality of Cazenga, under the programme "EME in Movement", asked the militants for discipline and cohesion from the base to the top, taking into account the great challenges that MPLA has to face.

She stressed the need for the militant to be close to the community and to support initiatives to combat the new coronavirus, complying with biosecurity measures to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the partisan official called for the mobilization of residents for campaigns to collect rubbish inside neighborhoods, as it is one of the preventive health measures in this rainy season.

In his turn, the itinerant secretary of the party in Luanda, Bento dos Santos "Kangamba" noted that the MPLA continued to work to resolve the problems of the communities.

In Cazenga, MPLA has 104,458 militants, distributed in 1,786 action committees.

The "EME in Moviment" programme, which started 15 days ago, has already passed through the municipalities of Cacuaco and Viana and is headed by Luanda's first secretary, Joana Lina.

Angola's credibility on peace goes back to Agostinho Neto

Addis Ababa - Angola's permanent representative to the African Union, Francisco da Cruz, said that the country's credibility, in terms of Peace and Security and Conflict Resolution, was also the result of the first steps taken by António Agostinho Neto after he proclaimed National Independence on 11 November 1975.

Francisco da Cruz , also ambassador to Ethiopia, was speaking Friday during a video conference on the "Life and Work of Agostinho Neto," the first President of Angola, marking the "Day of the National Hero," celebrated on 17 September.

Addressing the diplomatic dimension of Agostinho Neto, the ambassador considered that there is today a different southern Africa, thanks to the commitment of Angola, so "Africa accepts us as a country of principles and engaged in issues of peace and security.

For the diplomat, Neto's quote, according to which "In Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa is the continuation of our struggle" defined the diplomatic agenda of Angola, having as fundamental pillars not only the defense of its strategic interests but also its commitment and contribution to the development of relations between peoples and nations.

The non-alignment policy then outlined, allowing friendly relations with other peoples of different regimes to the Angolan, helps to understand the efforts of Agostinho Neto in establishing relations with the USA and, in 1978, with the neighbouring Zaire (now DRC), which provided a new reality of cooperation and a dynamic of solidarity with the latter.

According to Francisco da Cruz, for Agostinho Neto Angolan diplomacy would follow the nation's wishes for peace and cooperation for economic development, as well as serve for liberation and peace in the world.

Besides the anti-colonial struggle, he was always concerned about creating conditions of dignity and progress for Angolans, animated by the feeling that, "the most important thing is to resolve people problems," he added.

The diplomat said that Agostinho Neto had the conscience and belief that it was not enough to be pure and just cause, being necessary that purity and justice exist in each citizen.
