Adapted World Cup: Angola face Brazil in quarter-final match

Istanbul - The National Amputee Football Team face Brazil National Squad this Thursday, at 2 pm, with the Angolan side focussing on winning the World Cup for the second consecutive time, an event which is taking place in Istanbul, Turkey.

This quarter-final match, taking place at the Turkey Football Federation complex, brings together teams that know each other very well. The last time they faced each other was in 2018, in the semi-finals of the World Cup held in Mexico.

With a persistent 1-1 draw in the 50th minute, it was necessary the advantage of extra time for Augusto Cheto´s players to resolve the situation, Angola scored through Heno Guilherme and José Candeeiro.

The Angolan team then went on to face hosts Turkey in the final, winning 5-4 on penalties, due to a persistent tie that was cancelled until extra time.

The truth is that both CPLP countries are back in the field again in a knockout stage with the same players as before. Angola, for example, has only four debutants, the defenders Paciência Félix and Rocha Manuel, winger Lucas Fungula and goalkeeper Augusto Lilito.

In a statement to ANGOP on Wednesday, the national coach, Augusto Cheto, said that Angola will face a strong opponent technically, but not so physically, and Angola will focus on the latter issue.

The coach mentioned also that the physical condition of the players and speed as being the points that differentiate them from the remaining competitors.

He expressed anxiety as an issue to overcome, considering Wednesday´s match in which Angola beat England, 1-0, but had to suffer until shortly into extra time to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.

“The team went in determined to solve the match early and as the goals did not come in the intial period, anxiety ended up influencing the approach to the game, which fortunately ended with victory”, he said, adding that after dialogue, he hopes that against Brazil it will be different.

The national squad players are goalkeepers Jesus Mateus, Sebastião Cacumba and Lilito Augusto, defenders Félix Paciência, Francisco Amaro, Celestino Elias and Rocha Manuel, midfielders Laurindo Lucamba, Hilário Cufula and Jesus Morais and forwards Sabino António, José Candeeiro, Lucas Fungula, João Chiquete and Heno Guilherme.

Angola produces more than 30, 000 tons of cocoa/year

Luanda - Cocoa production in the country stands at more than 30,000 tonnes a year, said Wednesday the Secretary of State for Forests, André de Jesus Moda.

André Moda released the data to the press on the sidelines of the Cocoa and Honey Symposium and Fair, running under the motto "Disseminating Angola's unknown treasures".

He said with a greater commitment it is possible to diversify the portfolio of exported products.

The official also noted that the Government's policy is to continue to expand the production of honey and cocoa, stating that, with the work done, this production will be able to boost the national economy.

Moda stressed that the country has 3.150 million family farms, and if everyone gets involved in the production of honey, some statistics from other countries will be exceeded.

As for the legislation on cocoa, the official said that the country still operates under the colonial one. He added that at this time, as part of the restructuring process of the Ministry, the sector is going to work on agrarian policies and their subsequent instruments to correspond with the demands of the market.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) ambassador to Angola, Jeannette Seppen, reiterated the continuous support for the country in its effort to diversify the economy.

She pointed to the agriculture and products made in Angola, such as cocoa, coffee, honey, among others, as crucial for diversification of the national economy.

The diplomat highlighted the programme developed with the Government called “Joint Path”, with extensive cooperation in security, education, investment and trade.

Jeannette Seppen recognises that producers are committed to developing agricultural potential.

Jeannette Seppen also stressed the EU’s interest in strengthening trade and economic ties between member states and Angola.

The Ivory Coast ambassador, Somet Santiero Jean-Marie, highlighted the fact that it is the first power on the continent that covers 40% of the world's needs.

He considers that it is necessary to have an agreement for cooperation with this African country, as they can easily help Angola to have a good cocoa production.

Russia warns US of direct military clash risk

The US’s decision to send more military aid to Ukraine “increases the danger of a direct military clash” between Russia and the West, Moscow has warned.

Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said it was an “immediate threat” to Moscow, describing the US as “a participant of the conflict”.

Earlier, the US announced another $625m (£547m) in military aid to Ukraine.

Advanced US weaponry has been credited with helping Ukraine build momentum against occupying Russian forces.

Ukrainian troops have made significant advances in the country’s north-east and south in recent weeks.

The latest US hardware includes another four of the high-precision Himars multiple rocket systems.

In all, Washington has committed nearly $17bn in military support for Kyiv since Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine on 24 February.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Antonov warned that the US decision “to continue pumping the Kiev regime with heavy weapons only secures Washington’s status as a participant of the conflict”.

He said this would result in “protracted bloodshed and new casualties”.

“We call on Washington to stop its provocative actions that could lead to the most serious consequences,” the Russian ambassador said.

After suffering a string of major defeats on the battlefield in Ukraine in recent weeks, Russia has vowed to defend itself with all means available – not ruling out the use of its nuclear weapons.

Moscow is also pushing ahead with its annexation attempts of four Ukraine’s regions: Donetsk and Luhansk in the east, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.

However, Russia does not fully control any of the regions, and Ukrainian troops have been making rapid advances in the Kherson region in recent days.

Mr Antonov’s warning comes shortly after US President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris discussed further military co-operation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a statement, the White House stressed that “the United States will never recognise Russia’s purported annexation of Ukrainian territory.

“President Biden pledged to continue supporting Ukraine as it defends itself from Russian aggression for as long as it takes.”

The statement said the new military aid package included “Himars, artillery systems and ammunition, and armoured vehicles”.

The US-made HIMARS -High Mobility Artillery Rocket System – have been used to hit Russian targets such as command posts and ammunition depots. It has also been used to target bridges, including those on the approach to Russian-occupied Kherson, which Ukraine is trying to reclaim.

Anthony Joshua Lost Almost £3M In Sponsorship Deals After Losing His World Heavyweight Titles To Oleksandr Usyk

Anthony Joshua’s umbrella company 258 Management saw a 35 per cent reduction in turnover from February 2021 through to February 2022, new accounts have revealed.

The British heavyweight fighter, whose company’s principal aim purports to be securing endorsements and sponsorship deals, saw a significant reduction in revenue following his first loss to Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last year.

Revealing a costed breakdown of the year-on-year revenue streams, the new accounts reveal a drop off in endorsement deals for the fighter which amount to around £3m.

In the year to February 2021, Joshua made £8,453,578 via various endorsement deals, including the likes of Under Armour, Beats and Hugo Boss.

However, in the subsequent financial year, up to February 2022, his endorsements almost fell off a cliff, with the company bringing in just £5,527,952. The drop off amounts to around 35 per cent lost in endorsements.

A breakdown of the numbers reveals the most significant loss in revenue came from the Non-EU area, with Joshua’s 2021 endorsement revenue stream of reducing by almost £2m from £3,576,787 to £1,598,980.

Hans Niemann ‘Likely Cheated’ In More Than 100 Games

A chess player at the centre of a cheating row gripping the game “likely” cheated in more than 100 games online, according to an investigation.

Hans Niemann has been accused by world champion Magnus Carlsen of cheating, though no evidence has been presented.

Now an investigation by Chess.com says it is likely Niemann has cheated “much more often” than he has acknowledged.
But it found no evidence he had cheated in his game against Carlsen or in any “over-the-board” games.

The American has admitted cheating in informal games when he was younger but denies doing so in competitive games.
The 19-year-old, who has been approached by the BBC for comment, has previously accused Carlsen and Chess.com of trying to ruin his career.

The scandal began earlier this month after Carlsen, considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, was defeated by Niemann at the Sinquefield Cup in a major upset.

The Norwegian made veiled accusations of cheating against Niemann at the time before openly accusing him last week.
Now Chess.com has produced a 72-page investigation into Niemann’s games on the site, which most of the world’s top players compete on, including for cash prizes.

The site, which has banned Niemann for alleged cheating, claims it is likely he cheated as recently as 2020, including in prize money events and against highly-rated “well known” figures in the game.

Scientist Who Extracted DNA From 40,000-Year-Old Bones Wins Nobel Prize

A Swedish scientist, Svante Paabo has emerged winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine over his decades’ work of extracting DNA from 40,000-year-old bones and sequencing the genome of the Neanderthal, an extinct relative of present-day humans.

The 67-year-old was also able to establish that gene transfer occurred between extinct hominins and homo sapiens.

Born on April 20, 1955, Paabo is one of the founders of paleogenetics and a professor at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan.

His research investigating how the E19 protein of adenoviruses modulates the immune system earned him a PhD from Uppsala University in Sweden, in 1986.
In a statement on its website on Monday, October 3, the Nobel Prize organisation said Paabo won the prize “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.”

“Paabo’s seminal research gave rise to an entirely new scientific discipline; paleogenomics. By revealing genetic differences that distinguish all living humans from extinct hominins, his discoveries provide the basis for exploring what makes us uniquely human,” the statement added.

According to the Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine and a Professor in Medical Biochemistry for the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Dr Nils-Goran Larsson, what Paabo’s work achieved had been considered impossible.

Speaking in an audio posted on Nobel Prize’s website, Paabo said his work made him realise that other types of humans existed and contributed to the homo sapiens of today.

“Well, it does tell us that we are very closely related, first of all, and we are so closely related that they have contributed quite directly, 50, 60 thousand years ago, DNA to the ancestors of most people today, those who have their roots outside Africa. And that variation that, sort of, those variants do have an influence, and influence many things in our physiology today,” he said.

Asked if the discovery would change how humans viewed themselves today, he said, “In some sense, I do think it does so, the sort of realisation that until quite recently, maybe 14 hundred generations or so ago there were other forms of humans around and they mixed with our ancestors and have contributed to us today. The fact that the last 40 thousand years are unique in human history, in that we are the only form of humans around. Until that time, there were almost always other types of humans that existed.”

He added that he “did not think that this really would qualify for a Nobel Prize,” adding that he never expected to get the call informing him of the win.

“So I was just gulping down the last cup of tea to go and pick up my daughter at her nanny where she has had an overnight stay.

“And then I got this call from Sweden and I of course thought it had something to do with our little summer house… I thought the lawn mower had broken down or something,” Paabo said.

West Africa Leaders Pay Cautious Visit To Burkina Faso

A delegation from the West African regional body, Ecowas, has arrived in Burkina Faso and is due to meet the country’s new military leader, Ibrahim Traoré.

He seized power on Friday in the country’s second coup this year which was triggered by rising insecurity with multiple attacks by Islamist militants. The man he ousted as leader is now in Togo.

The Ecowas delegation is likely to urge the new leader to stick to earlier proposals to hold elections by mid-2024.

A small group of protesters in the capital Ouagadougou – some of whom were waving Russian flags – called for Ecowas and France to stay out of the country’s affairs.

Russian influence has been growing in several French-speaking African countries, particularly in Mali and the Central African Republic.

Kadeena Cox: British Paralympic champion says people question her disability

Britain’s Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox says living with hidden disabilities can feel like “fighting a losing battle” because of negative reactions from people.

New research shows 83% of people with less visible conditions experience a lack of understanding and negative attitudes when accessing public spaces. Cox has multiple sclerosis which affects the brain and nerves.

She says people have accused her of “faking” her disability.

“As someone living with MS, I get people saying I shouldn’t be parking in a blue badge spot,” said Cox.

“I get people who don’t want to give up the priority seat on the train or the bus for me.

“I get people on social media saying ‘that Kadeena Cox can’t be disabled, I don’t believe it’ or people saying you are faking it and taking money from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions).

“It’s people and their ignorant or uneducated selves making comments and passing judgement.”

Cox was speaking after new research by Bupa, GB Paralympics’ new official healthcare partner, and disability equality charity Scope into the experiences of people with disabilities, impairments and conditions.

Of the 382 disabled people surveyed:

  • About 70% of people were challenged on whether they are disabled or the nature of their disability while travelling, shopping or at an event
  • 76% have experienced insensitive comments about their disability
  • 68% have been told “you don’t look disabled”

Cox won gold in cycling and athletics at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, before retaining her C4-5 500m time trial title with a stunning world-record ride in Tokyo.

The 31-year-old added: “On social media I’m always dancing around, I’ll be getting in and out of my wheelchair, doing wheelchair dances just to showcase not illnesses are what you think.

“I’ll do videos where I post all the things that I deal with that you can’t see: the brain fog, the bladder issues, the pain, the sensory issues, the lack of sensation in my feet.”

Cox had a stroke in 2014 and was subsequently diagnosed with MS. She has also spoken publicly about her struggles with what she describes as “disordered eating”.

She added: “I struggle with an eating disorder that I’ve openly spoke about so that’s one challenge. It really makes you question your life sometimes.

“Now I’ve got this disability, my mental health is struggling because people are commenting on my disability and you just feel like you’re fighting a losing battle.

“There are some days when I’m just like ‘What am I fighting for?’ But the reality is I’m fighting for all those people that are in this position and feel like there’s nothing to fight for.”
