ONLINE FESTIVAL
SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE - TRANSFORMING FOOD SYSTEM- ANGOLA

Our everyday motto is: "Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food"

Hello world!

My name is Sofonie Dala, I'm from Angola. Today we are celebrating the Youth World Food Day an event that informs young people about sustainable innovations within the food industry. Our campaigns also work to identify and mobilize Youth globally on Environmental Issues, Ideas, and Solutions to Food Systems. On this very special day, we are going to show you how to use soy products. I have two types of soy flour, this one more brownish, is used to make tea and this yellowish one is used to make the soy porridge. In addition to milk, soy tea is very rich in protein and also very good for our health, drinking it every morning helps fight malnutrition, especially in children, as we can see in the following scenario.

Using soy flour to make delicious delicacies (tea and porridge)
Our little Flo is enjoying a delicious tea and soy porridge!

Malnutrition is one of the main causes of child death in Angola. Furthermore, children, with weaker bodies and health, are more vulnerable and suffer seriously from hunger.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to use soybean flour, tea and soybean milk as protein quality diet to improve nutritional status of malnourished children.

Preparing typical dish from Angola

Garri (Funje in Angola) refers to the creamy granular flour obtained by processing the starchy tuberous roots of freshly harvested cassava. made in Africa, this meal is a very high energy food, contains proteins, fat, carbohydrates, iron, Vitamin B and C and also starch.

Reason why, our guest Suzana eats it every day.

Nutritional benefits of cassava!

For many years, cassava product like garri and fufu has served as a healthy choice of food for many people, especially Africans. However, many people do not know about any health benefits they can derive from consuming this very popular source of food. In this article, you’ll be learning about health benefits and nutritional component of cassava and the many products that come from it.

FIBER:
By far, cassava has one of the highest amounts of fiber compared to other sources of food you can find. This means that eating cassava can help your digestion, burn fat and give you more energy. High fiber foods are also known to make you get full very quickly and help reduce the risk of obesity. The fiber in cassava can also help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as helps you control your blood sugar.

LOW FAT
Foods that contain a high amount of fats can put you at risk of many health issues including heart problems, strokes and hypertension. One way to fight this is to eat foods like cassava, which has very low fat. In addition to that, cassava also has a higher amount of protein when compared to other tropical foods like potatoes and yam. Also, cassava is free of gluten, which makes it an excellent choice for food preparation meant for people with celiac disease.

VITAMIN A
Recently, the Nigerian government released a type of cassava known as ‘yellow cassava’ that contains vitamin A. this means that consuming cassava product made from yellow cassava has very high health benefits including good eye sight. This type of cassava will be very useful for the rural communities that have very limited access to food supplements or artificial nutritional drugs.

MANY OTHER VITAMINS AND MINERALS
Apart from vitamin A, cassava also contains moderate amount of vitamin B, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, folates and pyridoxine. In addition to that, it also contains minerals like manganese, iron, and zinc.

COPPER AND MAGNESIUM
Cassava has a very high amount of copper and magnesium minerals. Consuming food high in magnesium helps to promote a healthy long life, by reducing your risk of contracting osteoporosis and at the same time lowering your blood pressure. While consuming a good amount of copper will help a functional and healthy nervous system.

Report of the campaign

As the effort to achieve equality life for all continues, we launched our campaign to instruct youth to live the sustainable lifestyle towards climate action, gender equality, nourished and healthy food, quality education and social justice for all.

The campaign was focused on transforming the food system with the main objective to guide and inspire young people to live a more sustainable lifestyle starting by exploring what we can and what we are already doing to live more sustainability until the reduction of unsustainable actions that harm our health and the environment.

We recorded several case studies, worked with ordinary citizens of various ages including children and elderly people, and also had the special participation of therapist and Doctor of traditional medicine Mr. Xavier.

We found that people in Angola eat foods based on edible and medicinal plants such as cassava leaves, moringa, shaya, scoparia dulcis, cabbage, tubercles and cereals, potato branches and many other vegetables planted in their own family gardens. According to therapist Xavier, these plants help fight diseases such as: diabetics, hepatitis, typhoid fever, headaches, stomach pain, bowel problem, lack of appetite, lack of vitamins in the organism and several other illnesses.
It is interesting that one of the popular dishes of Angolans is Funje (Garri)- a traditional Angolan recipe for a classic porridge made by stirring fufu (known as cassava flour) into water. It is a staple accompaniment in Angola to many dishes, including the calulu stew dishes and various others. It is a smooth and creamy mashed potato like substance that is perfect for evening out the intense flavor and wonderful spicy kicks of many Angolan dishes.

Garri also refers to the creamy granular flour obtained by processing the starchy tuberous roots of freshly harvested cassava. made in Africa, this meal is a very high energy food, contains proteins, fat, carbohydrates, iron, Vitamin B and C and also starch.

We also explored the importance of soy products role in the treatment of malnutrition, especially in children.

The results of the campaign also show us that many people do not eat well, consume foods and beverages that not only harm their health but also harm the environment, they also lack knowledge about what it means to live a sustainable and they don't even imagine that many of their actions are unsustainable and cause damage to the environment, for example, throwing away the leftover. Food waste from  homes is a greater cause of global warming, it generates 8 a 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. When food is thrown out, it eventually makes its way to landfills (which can themselves be a problem for the environment). Food that ends up in landfills produces a large amount of methane – a more powerful greenhouse gas than even CO2.

In the main cities, hungry people flock to beg and collect food scraps and cast iron for sale. Each one has their own life story, but they all share a common gift – the search for survival on the street, to avoid hunger and cheat the demanding stomach or get a job and give dignity to the family.

Based on these and other factors, we conclude that there is an urgent need to educate and use all means of communication to inform communities about the importance of living a sustainable lifestyle in order to ensure long life for everyone and our for planet.

Youth World Food Day - October 16, 2019

Challenge

We challenge you!
As the world's population grows, it becomes more difficult to feed all the mouths. In a world where the climate is changing, raw materials are becoming scarce and the amount of agricultural land cannot be expanded much further, the available raw materials and food must be handled more carefully. With this year's edition, we challenge you to make the ideal vegetarian burger.

The world is full of food heroes – from farmers to drivers, shop assistants, food bank or government representatives – who despite various challenges, work hard to make sure that food makes its way from farms to our table. Let’s celebrate their great efforts this World Food Day. And remember, you can become a food hero too! World Food Day celebrates the whole world annually on October 16 in honor of the establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.

Cambridge University pauses £400m UAE deal over spyware claim

The University of Cambridge has paused a proposed £400m partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to the alleged use of Pegasus spyware, its vice-chancellor said.

Last week, the High Court found the ruler of Dubai ordered the hacking of the phone of his ex-wife.

In July, the university said it was in talks with the UAE about a potential partnership.

Prof Stephen Toope, Cambridge’s vice-chancellor, said it was now “on hold”.

Speaking into the university’s student newspaper Varsity, he said: “The revelations about Pegasus caused us to decide that it’s not the right time to be pursuing these kinds of really ambitious plans with the UAE.

“It’s always a question of fine balance: of course you have to assess the opportunity that’s being presented to make a difference in the world and the risks to reputation of a whole series of important values for the university.

“There are existing relationships across the university on a departmental and individual academic level but there are no conversations about a big project.

“It’s all on hold for now.”

The High Court found Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum interfered with British justice by ordering the hacking of the phone of his ex-wife, Princess Haya of Jordan.

The phones of her solicitors, Baroness Fiona Shackleton and Nick Manners, were also targeted during their divorce custody case, according to the court.

In its ruling, the court said the hacking used the software called Pegasus, from the Israeli company, the NSO Group.

Sheikh Mohammed denied any knowledge of the hacking.

A University of Cambridge spokesman said it approached the proposed partnership with the UAE “with an open mind and rigorously weighing the opportunities to contribute to society – through collaborative research, education and innovation – against any challenges”.

“We will be reflecting over the next few months before further evaluating our long-term options with our partners and with the university community,” he added.

Squid Game: Children copying Netflix show in playground, schools warn

Pupils as young as six have been acting out games from violent Netflix thriller Squid Game, teachers have warned.

Schools around England have warned parents to check their device settings amid multiple reports of children viewing the smash-hit show.

The South Korean series features characters competing in a series of games where failure results in death.

One head teacher said the 15-rated programme was “totally unsuitable” for primary age children.

Gareth Nichols, from Sir Francis Hill primary in Lincoln, said “a small group of pupils within school, aged around six” were discussing the show and “re-enacting some scenes”.

Mr Nichols said the class teacher “immediately contacted parents to make them aware”.

He added: “[The teacher] also advised parents to check settings on their devices as pupils may be accessing and viewing this show without their parents’ knowledge.”

Welton Primary School in Brough, East Yorkshire, said it was aware the show was being watched by pupils in Years 3 to 6 and had sent out guidance to parents.

The series, which has has become Netflix’s most-watched show in 90 countries, has been rated appropriate for viewers aged 15 and older and has content warnings including sex, violence and suicide.

In it, cash-strapped contestants play games such as marbles, tug of war and red light, green light for the chance to win cash. However, if they fail any of them they are shot dead.

Mr Nichols said: “Although some of the ‘games’ portrayed could be viewed as adaptations of traditional playground games, the violent consequences of failure are inappropriate for younger viewers and I would wholeheartedly support the 15 rating given to the show.

“I would strongly advise all parents to check and monitor what their child is viewing at home, in order to keep them safe from such material.”

Migrant rescue boat finally permitted to dock in Sicily

Rome, Oct. 15, (dpa/GNA) – After days of waiting in the Mediterranean, a rescue ship run by the NGO ResQ has docked in Sicily with almost 60 rescued migrants on board.

The ship, the ResQ People, has finally arrived safely in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo, the organization tweeted on Friday. Those rescued are to be tested for the coronavirus before being allowed to disembark.

The crew reportedly rescued the migrants on Sunday night. Since then, one migrant was taken ashore for medical treatment by the Italian coast guard.

Migrants frequently set out by boat from North Africa in a bid to reach the EU. On the dangerous crossing, the boats often get into distress at sea. According to United Nations figures, almost 1,180 migrants have died in the central Mediterranean so far this year.

Bill Clinton: Former US president in hospital for ‘non-Covid infection’

Former US President Bill Clinton has been receiving hospital treatment in California for a urinary tract infection that developed into sepsis.

Mr Clinton, 75, is “on the mend” and “in good spirits” after being admitted to UC Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday, spokesman Angel Ureña said.

A statement from Mr Clinton’s doctors said he had received antibiotics and fluids.

They added he would likely be released home soon.

“He remains at the hospital for continuous monitoring,” they wrote. “After two days of treatment, his white blood cell count is trending down and he is responding to antibiotics well.”

According to US media, Mr Clinton – who was in California to attend a private event for his foundation – had felt fatigued on Tuesday and underwent tests before being admitted to the hospital.

His spokesman Mr Ureña described the hospital visit on Thursday only as “a non-Covid-related infection”. Physicians later confirmed the urological diagnosis.

Mr Clinton served as US president from 1993 until 2001. He was impeached in 1998 for lying to investigators about his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He was acquitted at his Senate trial.

The doctors at UC Irvine are in contact with Mr Clinton’s medical team in New York, as well as his cardiologist, as the former president has a history of heart issues.

In 2004, Mr Clinton had a quadruple bypass surgery and, ten years later, had a clogged artery opened after complaining of chest pains.

Not long after his second surgery, the ex-president – known for his love of fatty foods – went vegan.

Nike Jordan boss reveals he murdered an 18-year-old in 1965

A long-time Nike executive in the US has revealed that he shot and killed a teenage boy in the streets of West Philadelphia 56 years ago.

Larry Miller, chairman of the popular Jordan Brand, confessed to the 1965 murder in an interview with Sports Illustrated published on Wednesday.

“It was eating me up inside,” he said of his actions at age 16, when he was “a straight-up gangbanger”.

The admission comes ahead of the launch of his memoir next year.

Mr Miller said he had joined the Cedar Avenue gang in West Philadelphia at age 13, quickly changing from “a straight-A student” and drinking everyday.

When a friend was killed by a rival gang member, Mr Miller says, he grabbed a .38 handgun, got drunk with three friends and went in search of retribution.

Instead, on 30 September 1965, he fired into the chest of the first person they encountered: 18-year-old Edward White.

“That’s what makes it even more difficult for me, because it was for no reason at all,” he said.

He served a jail sentence for the murder.

Mr Miller described the decision to come clean about his past – which he has long hidden from his children, friends and closest business associates – as “really difficult”.

“Because for years, I ran from this,” he told Sports Illustrated. “I tried to hide this and hope that people didn’t find out about it.”

Mr Miller has been at Nike since 1997 and manages the daily operations of Nike Basketball, the Jordan Brand and Converse.

He is also a former executive at Kraft Foods and Campbell Soups, and an ex-president of the Portland Trail Blazers professional basketball team.

He says he never lied about his prison time in job applications.

Ahead of the interview, Mr Miller reportedly informed members of his inner circle, including basketball legend Michael Jordan and NBA commissioner Adam Silver, of the incident.

His forthcoming book “Jump: My Secret Journey from the Streets to the Boardroom” – written in collaboration with his oldest daughter – will detail the incident, as well as his multiple stints in juvenile detention and prison over a variety of offences.

He says he hopes his story can help steer at-risk youth away from a life of violence and inspire formerly incarcerated people to know they can still make a contribution to society.

“A person’s mistake, or the worst mistake that they made in their life, shouldn’t control what happens with the rest of your life,” he said.

Britain: Around 43,000 may have been given wrong Covid test results

London, Oct. 15, (PA Media/dpa/GNA) – An estimated 43,000 people may have been given wrong negative PCR Covid-19 test results in Britain, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.

Testing operations provided by Immensa Health Clinic at its laboratory in Wolverhampton have been suspended, following an investigation into reports of people receiving negative PCR test results after they have previously tested positive on a lateral flow.

The errors relate to test results given to people between September 8 and October 12, mainly in the South West of England, but with some cases in the South East and Wales.

There are no technical issues with test kits themselves and people should continue to test as normal, UKHSA said.

It said a full investigation is being carried out into why and how incorrect results were given.

The government’s NHS Test and Trace service estimates that around 400,000 samples have been processed through the lab, but new samples are now being redirected to other labs.

Test and Trace is contacting people who could still be infectious to advise them to take another test, while close contacts who are symptomatic will also be advised to take a test, as is already recommended.

PCR tests can detect Covid-19 several weeks after infection.

If a person has a positive lateral flow result, they are told to have a follow-up PCR to confirm the finding.
