British Pound Plummets to Record Low Against the Dollar

The British pound fell to a new record low against the US dollar of $1.035 on Monday, plummeting more than 4%.

The slide came as trading opened in Asia and Australia on Monday, extending a 2.6% dive from Friday — and spurring predictions the pound could plunge to parity with the US dollar in the coming months.

The unprecedented currency slump follows British Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng’s announcement on Friday that the United Kingdom would impose the biggest tax cuts in 50 years at the same time as boosting spending.

The new tax-slashing fiscal measures, which include scrapping plans for rising corporation tax and slashing the cap on bankers’ bonuses, have been criticized as “trickle-down economics” by the opposition Labour party and even lambasted by members of the Chancellor’s own Conservative party.

Former Tory chancellor Lord Ken Clarke criticized the tax cuts on Sunday, saying it could lead to the collapse of the pound.

“I’m afraid that’s the kind of thing that’s usually tried in Latin American countries without success,” Clarke said in an interview with BBC radio.

The pound has been hammered by a string of weak economic data, but also the steep ascent of the US dollar, a safe haven investment that sees inflows in times of uncertainty.

The euro also hit a 20-year low of 0.964 per dollar.

But the economic outlook in the UK means the pound is suffering more than most, in the face of a disastrous energy crunch and the highest inflation among G7 nations.

The previous record low for the British pound against the US dollar was 37 years ago on February 25, 1985, when 1 pound was worth $1.054.

“Should there be any escalation to the war in Ukraine…we would see further sharp downside in the Pound as well as the Euro,” said Clifford Bennett, chief economist at ACY Securities, an Australian brokerage firm.

“One should not underestimate the crisis that is all of Europe at the moment and the Pound is more vulnerable than most,” he said.

The soaring US dollar also sent major Asian currencies tumbling today

Africa Must Act Decisively To Eradicate Poverty, Promote Inclusiveness And Equality – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on corporate individuals and organisations to become part of Africa’s change makers for prosperity on the continent.

According to him, there is currently a limited opportunity for Africa to act decisively in eradicating poverty, fostering inclusiveness, championing equality and safeguarding the health of our planet.

Speaking at the 2022 Global Citizen Festival held in Accra on September 24, 2022, President Akufo-Addo advocated for needed reforms and measures aimed at addressing Africa’s pressing needs.

“We have a limited opportunity to act decisively to leave millions out of poverty for both inclusiveness and equality to safeguard the health of our planet,” President Akufo Addo said.

“I invite other corporates and individuals to be part of this historical journey towards the creation of African prosperity for the Africa we want,” he added.

He further called for investments aimed at improving Ghana and Africa’s climate change efforts in order to ensure citizens can live in a safe and clean environment.

President Akufo-Addo however announced the launch of a $1 billion fund called the African Prosperity Fund in collaboration with the Southern African government.

“It will fund strategic and transformational projects on the continent in the areas of infrastructural development, financial access and participation of women and youth, education healthcare, technology ad sustainability so that we leave no one behind in Africa,” he explained.

In his conclusion, the president commended the organizers of the Global Citizen Festival for choosing Ghana for this year’s event and urged for more collaboration in the future.

Deadly gun attack at Russian school

A gunman has opened fire at a school in central Russia, killing at least 13 people and injuring 21, Russian officials say. Victims include seven children at the school of about 1,000 pupils in the city of Izhevsk.

The gunman killed himself at the scene. He was a former pupil of the school.

Russian media have posted videos which appear to show panic inside the building where the shooting took place.

Some footage shows blood on a classroom floor and a bullet hole in a window, with children crouching down underneath desks.

Seven children and six adults were killed, including two security guards and two teachers, according to Russian officials. Staff and pupils have been evacuated from the school buildings.

One local MP said the attacker – named as Artem Kazantsev- had been armed with two pistols.

A video posted online by the investigative committee shows the gunman lying dead on the floor wearing a T-shirt with a Nazi symbol and a balaclava. Investigators are searching his place of residence.

A mourning period until 29 September has been announced by the head of the region. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson said he is “deeply mourning” the attack.

The school is in the centre of Izhevsk, a city of about 650,000 residents, close to central government buildings.

German government sued over toxic air pollution

A group of German residents are suing their government over “dangerously” high air pollution levels. They claim their right to breathe clean and healthy air is being violated, and that the government is failing to protect their health.

Like many countries, Germany’s air pollution levels often far exceed World Health Organization limits. Globally, air pollution is associated with seven million premature deaths a year.

It is the first time individuals in Germany have taken such action citing human rights legislation.

The case comes after one of the EU’s top lawyers, the advocate general to the European Court of Justice, said in May that citizens could take such action to try to win compensation.

The group of seven claimants, which includes parents acting on behalf of children, say their health is at risk and politicians are failing to protect them. A number of them have asthma.

They live in Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf – four of German’s seven biggest cities- and claim they are breathing air with concentrations of pollution four to five times higher than the WHO’s acceptable limits.

Volker Becker-Battaglia lives in Munich, on one of Germany’s most polluted streets. “Air pollution is a problem you can’t see. It’s not in people’s minds, but it’s a killer,” he told BBC News.

“About 150,000 people drive their cars in front of our house every day, it’s horrible. We flee the city whenever we can,” he explains.

Constanze, from Düsseldorf, who prefers to use her first name only to protect her privacy, said she is taking part in the case for her two children.

“They deserve to grow up healthy. Living in a city should not condemn them to getting sick because of air pollution, and carrying its impacts with them for the rest of their lives.”

Germany’s air pollution levels are in line with the country’s own law, but the claimants say the law must change to reflect growing scientific consensus.

The WHO slashed the recommended limits in 2021, as more evidence became available about the dangers of toxic air.

Germany’s Environment Agency said that the federal states are responsible for assessing air quality, and take action if limits are breached.

“The WHO guide values are recommendations that do not have the legally binding character of the limit values of the EU Air Quality Directive,” a spokesperson said.

Research published this month suggests how breathing in car fumes can lead to lung cancer by awakening dormant cells. About one in 10 cases of the disease is attributed to air pollution.

The German court could compel the government to take action to reduce it. The case is supported by environmental organisations Client Earth and Deutsche Umwelthilfe.

“Protection from air pollution is a human rights issue. Many people are starting to understand how much their life and their children’s lives can improve if governments start implementing better controls,” Irmina Kotiuk, human rights lawyer with Client Earth, said.

Germany could act as a leader in improving air pollution, prompting other countries to do the same, she suggests.

The claimants are also asking that the German government educates the public about dangerous levels of air pollution based on WHO advice.

The case is filed in Germany’s constitutional court that protects citizens’ fundamental human rights. The claimants are not suing for financial compensation, but for the government to take action.

A ruling in their favour would apply nationwide.

It comes after a series of cases and rulings in Europe on air pollution.

In 2020, nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah became the first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death. She lived near a busy road in London and died of an asthma attack.

France’s government was ordered to pay a  €10m (£8.9m) fine in 2021 over failures to improve air quality.
