Corona Voice Angola. The tok show with Sofonie Dala. Don't miss it! Day 6

Our Covid-19 show is ongoing in Angola. Day 6

Youth have been hit hard by school closures and the closing down of entry-level jobs in the labour market as well as internships and apprenticeships. As the pandemic is causing massive damage to the informal economy, the situation for young and women workers in this vulnerable sector is even more worrisome.

Our today's guest is Catia, she will share with us her experiences during the pandemic.

Hello, I'm Catia!

The coronavirus pandemic affected me in several ways: as a student I was unable to go to school for a long time, I missed many school subjects and I was unable to learn anything new. Now that classes have reopened, I can again learn new lessons, see my colleagues and gain new knowledge.

Has the school instructed you to follow the preventive measures against the coronavirus?

Yes. Always wash our hands with water and soap, always use facial masks and alcohol gel, we must always prevent ourselves and avoid crowding.

And how is the movement at school? Have all the students who studied with you before returned to school?

Yes, they came back, but we were divided weekly, 15 students go one week and another 15 go in another week.

How has the coronavirus affected your social life?

Well, covid-19 has negatively affected my family in several ways: they are no longer able to work normally, and other family members have been fired from their jobs to avoid agglomeration in the workplace.

This is the first and the only Coronavirus show in Angola where the most ordinary citizens show their brilliant talents.

The heroes of the program are the most ordinary citizens - they share with the audience their songs, poems and real stories of how the Coronavirus pandemic affected their lives.

GhanaElections: EC Ready To Declare Presidential Results Today; With Or Without Full Figures From 2 Remaining Regions

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has stated that, they are confident of declaring the results for the 2020 Presidential election today, even if there are some results left.

New voters register: NDC’s position absurd – EC fires

This follows the failure of the Commission to meet an earlier 24-hour deadline announced by Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

Addressing a press conference where the Commission apologized for the delay, the Deputy Chairman in-charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Eric Asare Bossman said the results will be declared, and with or without the total figures from some two remaining regions.

These two regions, with 18 and 11 constituencies, are said to be the cause of the delay, hence, the resolution to go ahead with or without their full results

Giving more details, Dr. Bossman explained that, if the time comes for the commission to declare the results and with the 18 constituencies, about 17 or 16 results are ready, and the other constituencies with 11, about 10 or 9 are ready and analysis is done and they realize the remaining will not affect the outcome of the elections, “what it means is that we will go ahead and declare.”

“And as a Commission, we will come back to revise the numbers once we have them available. This is a standard which is done during election,” Dr. Bossman added.

He also stated that the Commission has so far received collated results from 14 regions and it’s working with agents from the various political parties to accumulate the results from the two left.

Meanwhile, ahead of the declaration by the Election Commission, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Aseidu Nketia, has asked supporters to pour out onto the streets and jubilate because their party has won the just-ended 2020 elections.

Mr. Nketia noted that despite the NDC’s belief that it has won the polls, the Akufo-Addo-led government is attempting to use the military to change the results in their favour.

US virus deaths hit record levels with the holidays ahead

Deaths from COVID-19 in the U.S. have soared to more than 2,200 a day on average, matching the frightening peak reached last April, and cases per day have eclipsed 200,000 on average for the first time on record, with the crisis all but certain to get worse because of the fallout from Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

US virus deaths hit record levels with the holidays ahead

Virtually every state is reporting surges just as a vaccine appears days away from getting the go-ahead in the U.S.

“What we do now literally will be a matter of life and death for many of our citizens,” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said Tuesday as he extended restrictions on businesses and social gatherings, including a ban on indoor dining and drinking at restaurants and bars.

While the impending arrival of the vaccine is reason for hope, he said, “at the moment, we have to face reality, and the reality is that we are suffering a very dire situation with the pandemic.”

Elsewhere around the country, North Carolina’s governor imposed a 10 p.m. curfew, and authorities in Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley sent a mass cellphone text alert Tuesday telling millions about the rapid spread of the virus and urging them to abide by the state’s stay-at-home orders.

The virus is blamed for more than 285,000 deaths and 15 million confirmed infections in the United States.

Many Americans disregarded warnings not to travel over Thanksgiving and have ignored other safety precautions, whether out of stubbornness, ignorance or complacency. On Saturday night, police in Southern California arrested nearly 160 people, many of them not wearing masks, at a house party in Palmdale that was held without the homeowner’s knowledge.

Before his death Friday from complications of COVID-19, 78-year-old former Alabama state Sen. Larry Dixon asked his wife from his hospital bed to relay a warning. “Sweetheart, we messed up. We just dropped our guard. … We’ve got to tell people this is real,” his friend Dr. David Thrasher, a pulmonologist, quoted him as saying.

Although Dixon had been conscientious about masks and social distancing, he met up with friends at a restaurant for what they called a “prayer meeting,” and three of them fell ill, Thrasher said.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, offered what sounded like a subtle rebuke of the way President Donald Trump and others in the administration have downplayed the disease and undercut scientists.

“Messages need to be critically consistent,” Birx said Tuesday at a Wall Street Journal conference of CEOs. “I think we need to be much more consistent about addressing the myths that are out there — that COVID doesn’t really exist, or that the fatalities somehow are made up, or the hospitalizations are for other diseases, not COVID, that masks actually hurt you.”

On Thursday, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel is widely expected to authorize emergency use of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, and shots could begin almost immediately after that. Britain on Tuesday started dispensing the Pfizer vaccine, becoming the first country in the West to begin mass vaccinations.

Still, any vaccination campaign will take many months, and U.S. health experts are warning of a continuing surge of infections in the coming weeks as people gather for the holidays.

California officials painted a dire picture as more than 22,000 residents test positive for the coronavirus each day, with about 12% inevitably showing up at hospitals in two to three weeks. They fear the spike could soon overwhelm intensive care units. Southern California’s Riverside University Health System Medical Center went so far as to open an ICU in a storage room.

For the sixth day in a row and 11 of the last 12 days, North Carolina hit new highs in the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19. The patient count has doubled over the past month to nearly 2,400.

In Georgia, the number of confirmed or suspected coronavirus infections has soared more than 70% in the past week, and hospitals are sounding alarms about their ability to absorb new COVID-19 patients.

The state is averaging more than 5,000 confirmed or suspected cases per day. Even then, Georgia ranks only 44th among the states for the most new cases per capita in the past 14 days because infections are spreading so rapidly everywhere else.

More than 2,500 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized Monday statewide. That’s below the summer peak of 3,200 but more than double the most recent low point in mid-October.

“We are effectively reversing the gains we made after the summer surge,” said Amber Schmidtke, an epidemiologist who does a daily analysis of Georgia’s COVID-19 numbers.

CAF fines The Gambia $100k for “breach of sportsmanship code”

THIS JUST IN – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a fine of 100,000 United States Dollars for breaching the code of sportsmanship in the saga of airport holdup of Gabonese players last month.

CAF fines The Gambia $100k for “breach of sportsmanship code”

Images of Gabonese national team players sleeping on bare floor at the Banjul airport hours ahead of the second leg qualifying game went viral as the Gambian airport authorities refused them entry over COVID-19 protocol disagreement.

In issuing the fine, CAF indicated that “The Gambian federation did not comply to the loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship values and rules of Fair Play concerning the reception of the Gabonese Delegation.”

The statement went on to indicate that “the Disciplinary Board decided to impose upon the Gambian federation a fine of 100.000 USD (One Hundred Thousand US Dollars) of which 50.000 USD (Fifty Thousand US Dollars) are suspended on the condition that the federation is not found guilty of a similar offense within a period of twenty-four (24) months.”

BURUNDI PRESIDENT RECEIVES MESSAGE FROM ANGOLAN LEADER

A message from the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, whose content is related to the boosting of co-operation, was handed last Tuesday, in Bujumbura, to the Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye.

Ministro angolano das Relações Exteriores, Téte António (esq), entrega mensagem ao Chefe de Estado do Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye

The letter touches on the need for the two countries to strengthen the “fraternal, friendship relations, the bilateral co-operation and also in the ambit of multilateral commitments”.

The message was handed by the Angolan Foreign Affairs minister,Téte António.

During the audience, the minister seized to occasion to present the new executive secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), the Angolan diplomat João Samuel Caholo.

Meanwhile, the Angolan secretary of State for Health, Franco Mufinda, who is also part of the delegation, has been received by the Burundi’s minister of Health, Thaddée Ndikumana. The two personalities exchanged experiences in the domain of prevention and fight against Covid-19.

ISABEL DOS SANTOS LOSES STAKE IN UNITEL

Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos will henceforth no longer have the right to vote, participate in shareholders' meetings and receive dividends at Unitel SA, following the decision from the Supreme Court of the British Virgin Islands.

Operadora Angolana Unitel

The move was also reported by the Angolan state-run Media houses – public television (TPA), national radio station (RNA) and newspaper (Jornal de Angola).

According to the Media, the judicial administrators of the Commercial Division of the Supreme Court of the British Virgin Islands decided to transfer to their management all bank accounts held and controlled by Vidatel, a company owned by Isabel dos Santos.

The judicial decision covers all inherent rights, including past and future dividends (interest on them).

The court decided, in an order dated November 19, following a lawsuit, to appoint judicial administrators for the management of specific assets of Vidatel, Limited, Isabel dos Santos company registered in the Islands Virgins, and all bank accounts held and / or controlled by Vidatel are managed by them.

Judicial co-administrators were appointed to preserve and secure the relevant assets, pending confirmation of Vidatel's conviction in relation to the arbitral award rendered in favor of PT Ventures, by the International Criminal Court ( ICC), on 20 February 2019, before the Paris Court of Appeal.

Judicial co-administrators must take any measures they deem necessary or desirable, including, in particular, measures to protect the company's relevant assets.

As a result of this decision, the company Vidatel is no longer under the control of Isabel dos Santos and, therefore, the 25 per cent of Unitel's shares held are also no longer under her control.

The British court decision once again supports the various lawsuits the Angolan State has filed against the businesswoman that damages the country.

The Provincial Court of Luanda, in case no. 3301/2019 - C, dated December 30, 2019, determined the preventive seizure of Vidatel's 25% stake in Unitel, a decision whose validity is recognised by the British Virgin Islands Court.
