21 dead, dozens missing after boat sinks in Bangladesh

Passenger vessel reportedly collided with a sand-laden cargo ship on a lake in the town of Bijoynagar in eastern Bangladesh.

At least 21 people were killed and dozens remain missing as a boat packed with passengers and a sand-laden cargo ship collided in a lake in eastern Bangladesh.

The boat was reportedly carrying some 60 passengers when the incident occurred on Friday on a lake in the town of Bijoynagar, local official Hayat-ud-Doula Khan said.

The cargo ship’s steel tip and the boat collided, causing the passenger vessel to capsize, he said.

“We have recovered 21 bodies including nine women and six children so far,” he told AFP news agency, adding the death toll will likely rise.

It is unclear how many people were on board at the time of the collision, and exactly how many remain missing. According to police official Imranul Islam, survivors said about 100 people were on board.

Local fire service spokesman Taufiqul Islam said divers were searching the scene for bodies, and reinforcements had been called in from neighbouring towns. Locals also joined the rescue efforts.

Police said at least seven people were taken to a local hospital after they were rescued from the sunken boat.

‘Loud noise’

Survivor Akhi Akter said she was travelling with her son, mother-in-law and brother-in-law in the passenger vessel.

“When the accident occurred, I managed to swim back to the bank. But the rest of my relatives are still missing,” she said tearfully.

A witness said two cargo ships hit the boat, which sank quickly, Dhaka-based The Daily Star newspaper reported.

“I was grazing cattle on the bank of the pond. I heard a loud noise and saw the cargo vessels hitting the passenger trawler. I saw the trawler sinking quickly,” witness Nurul Amin told the paper.

The area is 82km (51 miles) east of the capital, Dhaka. Local authorities have formed a committee to investigate the accident.

It was the latest in a string of similar incidents in the South Asian country. In April and May, 54 were killed in two separate boat capsizing accidents.

Experts blame poor maintenance, lax safety standards at shipyards and overcrowding for many of the deadly incidents.

Vessels transporting sand sit low in the water and can be hard to see in choppy conditions, particularly in poor lighting.

In June last year, a ferry sank in Dhaka after it was hit from behind by another ferry, killing at least 32 people. In February 2015, at least 78 people died when an overcrowded ship collided with a cargo boat.

Several civilians burned, hacked to death by rebels in DR Congo

The deadly attack happened in Kasanzi village in the Beni territory of North Kivu province, a local chief said.

Nineteen civilians in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have been burned and hacked to death by Ugandan rebels, a local official said.

Fourteen bodies were found on Saturday, a day after the incident, Kakule Kalunga told the AFP news agency.

A local chief said the bodies were discovered by Red Cross workers who went into the nearby forest to look for those missing after the attack on Kasanzi village in the Beni territory of North Kivu.

Beni lies at the heart of an area where the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – affiliated to ISIL (ISIS) – have mounted deadly attacks in spite of emergency security measures by President Felix Tshisekedi.

“[The] 19 people were killed by the rebels who plague the territory of Beni, the ADF,” Kalunga said, adding that the victims were killed by “bladed weapons and fire”, and that houses were also set ablaze.

In a statement on Friday, Meleki Mulala, a spokesman for the New Civil Society organisation in Rwenzori, deplored the absence of military personnel around Beni.

Regional military sources contacted by AFP did not immediately comment.

Since May, the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri have been under a state of siege, replacing civilian authorities with army and police officers to fight armed groups.

Earlier this month, a contingent of US special operations forces arrived in the area to help the Congolese army in their fight against the ADF, US and Congolese sources said at the time.

The size of the contingent was unknown but about a dozen soldiers could be seen in official photos of a meeting between Tshisekedi and a delegation led by the US ambassador to the DRC, Mike Hammer.

Argentina’s president charged with allegedly breaking quarantine

The case against Fernandez has grabbed headlines after Argentina imposed stricter lockdowns on the public.

Argentinian prosecutors charged President Alberto Fernandez with allegedly breaking a mandatory quarantine when he and his partner hosted a birthday party with friends last year.

Local media outlets Dailies Clarin and La Nacion reported the news, citing prosecutors, who did not immediately respond to a comment request.

The case against Fernandez has grabbed headlines in past weeks as Argentina imposed stricter lockdowns than most countries to deal with the pandemic.

In July of last year, Fernandez himself banned all social gatherings before hosting one for the birthday of Fabiola Yanez, his partner.

On Thursday, Fernandez participated in a hearing in the case and offered to pay a fine to settle the case.

Opposition lawmakers have tried to start a political probe into Fernandez because of the birthday party, although they have a slim chance of succeeding because most lawmakers are aligned with his ruling party.

Man Utd ‘reach agreement’ to re-sign Juventus forward, Ronaldo

Manchester United has confirmed they have reached an agreement to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.

United said the deal for the 36-year-old five-time Ballon d’Or winner was subject to personal terms, visa and a medical.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games in his first spell at Old Trafford before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

“Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester,” said a United statement.

United’s announcement came after a dramatic 24 hours. Neighbours Manchester City had looked to be one of the favourites to land the former Real Madrid player when some reports suggested personal terms had already been agreed between the two.

However, Ronaldo has opted to return to United where he spent six years and won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup – as well as the Fifa Club World Cup and Community Shield – under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Initially, Ronaldo thought there was no chance of a deal with his former club, but United have decided to make it happen, while City has missed out on another striker option after main target Harry Kane committed to Tottenham.

Speaking before City face Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday, manager Pep Guardiola said: “Cristiano is a Juventus player. I cannot add anything else.

“In these three or four days left until the transfer window shuts, anything can happen but, in my view, there are few players – Cristiano Ronaldo included, Messi is another – they decide where they are going to play.

“Right now, my feeling is I am more than delighted with the squad we have and we will stay the same.”

On Wednesday, Juventus told Ronaldo they were willing to sell him during the transfer window – but only if their conditions were met by interested clubs.

“[Ronaldo] gave his contribution, he made himself available, now he leaves and life goes on,” boss Massimiliano Allegri said on Friday.

“Things change, it’s a law of life. Juventus remains, which is the most important thing.

“He is to be thanked for what he has done, also as an example among the youngsters. But as I said, we must go on.”
