Recognizing the link between science, technology, and socio-economic development, as well as the key role of education in realizing individual potential, the Schlumberger Foundation flagship program is Faculty for the Future.

Faculty for the Future

The program’s long-term goal is to accelerate gender equality in STEM by generating conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific careers through alleviating some of the barriers they encounter when enrolling in STEM disciplines. The program is committed to gender parity in science in the interests of sustainable development and recognizes that full access to and participation in a STEM curriculum is essential for the empowerment of women and girls. By accelerating gender equality in STEM, the talent and capacities of these women can be developed for the benefit of their local communities, regions and nations.

The program awards fellowships for advanced research in STEM at leading research institutes abroad. Faculty for the Future Fellows are expected to return to their home countries upon completion of their studies to contribute to the economic, social and technological advancement of their home regions by strengthening the STEM teaching and research faculties of their home institutions as well as through their leadership in science-based entrepreneurship. They are also expected to contribute to the public sector where their newly acquired technical and scientific skills can help provide evidence-based support for STEM policy making, including topics of gender representation.

This program acts as a catalyst for these women to further tap into their potential. Through heightened motivation, sharpened self-awareness and a lasting passion for science they in turn capture the imagination of other women and girls around them to regard scientific pursuits as a necessary means towards advancement and growth.

Since its launch in 2004, 739 women from 82 countries have received Faculty for the Future fellowships for PhD and Post-Doctorate STEM research programs. Through interactive online tools and in-person meetings, the program provides a platform for these women to take joint action in identifying and unravelling the impediments that are holding back equal opportunities in STEM education and careers in their local communities and home countries.

The angolan Health Ministry expresses dismay at doctor's death

The Ministry of Health (MINSA) last Sunday appealed to the medical community and other actors in the health system for calm and serenity.

In reaction to the death of Doctor Sílvio Dala, which occurred on the 1st of this month in a police station, after being questioned by a member of the National Police for not wearing a face mask in his vehicle, MINSA appeals to health professionals not to give up in the mission of saving lives.

In the message of condolences to which ANGOP had access last Sunday, the ministerial department says that it joins the other institutions of the Executive, especially the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of the Interior, which instituted a criminal process with a view to clarifying the real circumstances in which the doctor's death occurred, to hold any possible offenders responsible.

“The Ministry of Health reiterates its firm commitment to the lives and physical, psychological and moral integrity of doctors and all other health professionals, especially in this particularly challenging time when they are in fact the front line in the fight against Covid-19”, states the note.

The victim died on his way to Prenda Hospital, after a malaise inside a police station, in the Rocha Pinto neighbourhood, Maianga district in Luanda.

The paediatrician suffered from a disease (not revealed), which, according to the autopsy, is the main cause of the physician’s malaise and death.

According to the spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior, Waldemar José, the physician suffered a collapse inside the police station and had bruises on his head, but the autopsy revealed that he did not suffer any aggression.

According to the version of the Ministry of the Interior, Sílvio Dala was allegedly questioned by a member of the National Police, for not wearing a mask inside his vehicle, and invited to go to the police station.

According to the new Presidential Decree on the Situation of Public Disasters, the use of a mask is mandatory on public roads and inside vehicles. Failure to comply with this presidential order is punishable with a fine of Akz 5.000,00 (US $8.2 equivalent).

Waldemar José went on to say that the physician was referred to a nearest police station, where all the formalities for the drafting of the report and the respective notification of transgression were completed.

Because the police station does not have a mechanism for paying the 5,000 kwanza fine, he said, the doctor made a phone call to someone related to him to pay the fine and take the proof of payment to the police station.

It was in this waiting period, according to the commissioner, that the citizen started to feel sick and  passed out, hitting his head on the floor.

The spokesman said that he was promptly placed in a defence and security forces vehicle that took him to Prenda Hospital, in the same district, where he died on the way.

Meanwhile, the version made public by the Ministry of the Interior has raised doubts in various circles of society, generating criticism about a possible bad approach by the Police.

The suspicions, replicated by several public figures, have gained strength after the publication of a photo on social media, in which the doctor is seen flat on the floor involved in a lot of blood.

Minister calls for increased agribusiness production

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, António Francisco de Assis, Friday in Luanda called on the national business community to invest in the agri-business sector, with the aim of increasing food production.

Speaking at the first meeting of the Angola-India Bilateral Joint Commission, by videoconference, the Cabinet minister told the press that much experience could be gained from this Asian country to be used in national family farming, as actions to boost agri-business and the logistics system.

"Today what stands out most is the lack of logistics, which is not the responsibility of the producer. Several chains have to intervene, mainly the private sector, to evacuate and market the products. These are issues for the economy and not for the farmer. Unfortunately these processes are slow in our country. That is why it is necessary to focus on agribusiness," he said.

Also about India, he said that the country had strong capital and Angolan experts should be able to obtain knowledge and use it in Angola, so that domestic producers are better trained.

The limitations noted, such as lack of financial resources, lower oil prices, which hamper agricultural production, amongst others, also deserved references from the minister, who advocated structured and joint work between the different sectors.

In relation to the meeting, opened by the Angolan foreign minister, Téte António, it analysed a cooperation agreement in the field of health, on removing visas from diplomatic and service passports, a memorandum of understanding between the diplomatic institutes of India and Angola.

Angola to send health professionals to India

Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta Monday in Luanda said that national cadres could be trained in the Republic of India, taking advantage of the potential of that Asian country.

Speaking to the press at the end of the first meeting of the Bilateral Joint Commission Angola - India, by videoconference, the minister said that Angola could make the best use of its ties of friendship and cooperation agreements.

"We need to look at this Asian power in terms of knowledge, health industry and pharmaceuticals. India is a major manufacturer of medicines and we want to create factories. We are building hospitals in several provinces and we need to train more technicians and to this end we should take advantage of the capacity of this partner," she said.

Without bringing forward the period of materialisation of that intention, the Health official said that Angolan professionals could attend training courses in India, as well as specialists from that country to come to Angola, in actions in the various areas of the sector.

In relation to the meeting, which was opened by Angolan Foreign Minister Téte António, it analysed a cooperation agreement in the field of health, on removing visas from diplomatic and service passports, a memorandum of understanding between Angola and India's diplomatic institutes.

The ministerial delegation was also attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, António Francisco de Assis.

Angola and India are expecting growth in investment, as well as trade that has seen renewed impetus after the meeting between President João Lourenço and Prime Minister Narenda Modi, in July 2018, on the fringes of the BRICS summit.
