THE ANGOLAN MINISTER STRESSES NEED FOR UPDATED MEDIA LAWS

The minister of Telecommunications, Technologies and Social Communication, Manuel Homem, Wednesday in Luanda, stressed the need for an update to the social communication laws, seeking their adjustment to the present context.

The minister was speaking at the launch of the contributions gathering campaign.

The Ministry has launched a public hearing campaign to gather contributions to adjust the law package in force in the country since 2016 to the current context.

The campaign is meant to respond to the need for a greater cooperation between the media professionals and the social communication sector.

According to the minister, the current context has brough in new forms of approach to the social phenomena and the human relations, sharply accelerating the use of the new technologies in the lives of individuals.

The minister on the occasion said the social communication sector’s agents are not unaware of the social transformations occurring in the sociaty.

According to him, the society and the events that affect it recommend new methods of production of contents and new solutions to the treatment of information that tend to affect the organisation and functioning of the organs and social communication services.

Manuel Homem added that the adjustment to the package constitutes a challenge to the audiences, with a view to the emergence of a set of laws more harmonised with the constitution and more adjusted to the needs and realities of the the society itself.

The purpose of the adjustment, according to the official, is to seek a common ground in considering the interests and conflicts facing the public authorities and the social communication agents.

Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Manuel Homem

During the event, minister Manuel Homem inaugurated the electronic platform www.consultapública.gov.ao, through which contributions can be channelled.

The current Social Communication package was passed by the National Assembly in 2016, comprising the Press Law, the Television Activity Law, the Radio Activity Law, the Advertisement Law and the Journalists Statute Law.

Somalia: Heavy gunfire erupts at opposition march in Mogadishu

Gunfire and blasts have erupted in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu, according to witnesses, Somali government and opposition leaders, as security forces clashed with protesters angered by delayed elections.

Somalia: Heavy gunfire erupts at opposition march in Mogadishu

It was unclear who opened fire first, but one witness Yusuf Mohamed reported a “heavy exchange of gunfire” between security forces and armed guards protecting opposition supporters who began their march along the main airport road.

“There can be casualties but we are taking cover now I don’t know exactly what happened,” he told the AFP news agency.

Another witness Fadumo Moalim told AFP: “We were peacefully walking along the airport road together with former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire, when the security forces opened fire on us, creating mayhem.”

A video seen by Al Jazeera from an anti-government demonstration showed civilians in face masks waving Somali flags scattering as gunfire erupted.

The violence comes after weeks of tensions over the holding of delayed elections in the Horn of Africa nation.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi, reporting from Nairobi, said that the gunfire erupted in an area close to the airport and that government and opposition sources had reported incidents.

“We have been told that the whole area where the incident happened has been cordoned off by the police and military,” she said.

She added that huge blasts have been heard in several buildings in the area but the situation had calmed down.

“We are being told people in Mogadishu are going to the mosques for prayers, but there is still a lot fear,” she said. “Many people we have spoken are saying that they want to stay home, or they want to stay in the mosques and see how this plays out.”

Calls to step down

A coalition of opposition candidates is calling for President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known by his nickname Farmaajo, to step down after his term expired on February 8.

The deadline to hold indirect elections was missed as the country’s semi-autonomous regions squabbled over how to conduct the vote.

Farmaajo is to hold a meeting with regional leaders on Mogadishu on Friday in a bid to resolve the election impasse.

The government had warned the opposition against staging the protest, due to soaring cases of coronavirus in the city. However the opposition pledged to press on.

“Tomorrow marks the onset of … mass protests all over Somalia which will continue until Farmajo steps aside to pave way for free, fair and credible elections,” said a statement from the opposition coalition on Thursday.

The group is allied against Farmaajo but includes candidates running individually for his job, including two of Somalia’s former presidents.

Tensions first erupted overnight, with both sides accusing the other of staging attacks.

The Somali government in a statement accused “armed militiamen” protecting opposition leaders of attacking a government security checkpoint and seeking to take over parts of Mogadishu.

The opposition denied this and accused government forces of attacking the hotel where they were staying.

“They have attacked Maida hotel where myself and former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,” were staying, said another former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed on Twitter.

After the fighting overnight, government forces took control of the public square where the protest was to be held, and closed down all roads leading there, stationing military vehicles and troops around the capital.

The soundtrack of history: How Black music has shaped American culture through time

Music and the performing arts have not only entertained the masses; they have also served to document history ― from early American music like ragtime and jazz to R&B and hip-hop and several genres in between.

The soundtrack of history: How Black music has shaped American culture through time

Time and time again, Black musicians mirror what’s going on in the world through their music and through providing music for others to perform. Sidney Madden is a co-host of NPR’s podcast “Louder Than a Riot,” which focuses on the intersections of music and culture. Her expertise as a music journalist gives a glance into how Black culture has influenced the music and entertainment industry as whole.

“Every genre that is born from America has Black roots associated with it, from rock ‘n’ roll to blues to disco,” Madden said. “The fingerprints of Black creators are all over what makes American music so unique.”

This interview was lightly edited for length and clarity.

What impact has the Black community had on American music?

Sidney Madden: There would be no American history without Black people in it. The fabric of what American society is socially, economically, industrially ― it wouldn’t be what it is without Black people. And you can see that especially when it comes to music.

What’s one fact about the American music industry that often flies under the radar?

Madden: Theft of Black creativity is something that is in the bedrock of American society. And if you go back to people like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is considered one of the godmothers of rock ‘n’ roll, many people didn’t know who she was. You could think of Elvis and where he took a lot of his stage presence from, where he took a lot of his bravado and conviction and his lines from, even some of the storytelling in his music ― it was stolen directly from Black descendants like Chuck Berry. Even if you look on the pop charts right now, so many artists who are considered titans of the game right now wouldn’t be anything and they wouldn’t have a song to string together if it wasn’t for their Black writers. I’m thinking specifically of Ariana Grande, this latest album, “Positions,” which was co-written by one of her best friends, and somebody who I think has one of the best pens in the game right now is Victoria Monet.

How have social movements coincided with Black music?

Madden: As we say on our podcast, “Louder Than a Riot,” all hip-hop is protest music, right? That’s the bedrock of what hip-hop has always been about. What’s happening in hip-hop is a microcosm for what’s happening in Black America, because it is a Black-born art form. And I think with the watershed moment we had last year that’s continuing to permeate with the Black Lives Matter movement in America and globally, more people are seeing that there would be nothing, there would be no soundtrack to the protest, without Black music. And that’s not only hip-hop. It’s happening in pop music. It’s happening in R&B. It’s happening in jazz.

Where do you see the future of Black music going?

Madden: I see the future of Black music going where Black people are going, and that’s limitless. The more we use our voice to talk about things that matter, things that need to be changed ― and not in a far-off dreamscape utopian way, but in a concrete, logistical, step-by-step way — these are the things that need to be improved in our community, because if it’s going to be improved in our community, it’s going to be improved in America as a whole. That’s where we’re going. We’re going to more positions of power, influence and applicable change.

Kim Kardashian files for divorce from Kanye West

Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from her husband Kanye West after months of rumours that the two were splitting.

Kim Kardashian files for divorce from Kanye West

The 40-year-old TV star filed documents on Friday, according to TMZ, through her lawyer Laura Wasser, but the date of separation was not listed.

The reality TV star and makeup guru is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their four young children: North, seven, Saint, five, Chicago, three, Psalm, 21 months.

A source confirmed to DailyMail.com soon after that Kim has filed for divorce. ‘The split is amicable and there is no drama,’ the insider shared.

DailyMail.com has not yet heard back from Kim’s rep regarding a comment.

Kim and Kanye started dating in 2012, became engaged in 2013 and wed in May 2014 in Italy after they had already welcomed their eldest daughter North.

This will be Kim’s third divorce as she was wed to Damon Thomas from 2000 until 2004 and she was married to Kris Humphries from 2011 until 2013.

An insider told the site that Kanye ‘is fine with the joint custody arrangement.’ He and Kim have already discussed co-parenting, it was added. The children have been seen mostly with Kim in Hidden Hills, California, in the past few months.

She has been very active about showing the kids on social media, with her last post being placed on Thursday which showed Psalm in one of West’s Yeezy T-shirt.

Kanye has not been pictured with the kids since the fall; it is believed Kim and Kanye split in October after an argument during her 40th birthday party held at The Brando resort in Polynesia; there were claims he arrived late and left early which angered the star.

The site added that there is a prenup and ‘neither party is contesting it.’

Kim is worth almost $1B thanks to her makeup, fragrance and intimates lines. The rapper is worth a reported $1.3B thanks to his music, concerts, and apparel and shoe lines.

And it was added that the stars are in the advanced stages of sorting their property agreement.

Their main house is a $60M mansion in Hidden Hills; West has been staying at their Cody, Wyoming ranch.

It looks as if the beauty has already moved on in a way.

Kim has been sharing several sexy images this year: not only has she posed in bikinis while on vacation but she also been photographed in lingerie for her new limited editions SKIMS line.

And she has reportedly not been wearing her wedding band from West since November 2020, though she has flashed it in photo shoots.

The Selfish author had very little contact with her 43-year-old rapper since October and there have been many reports that the two were over. The tension reportedly started in July when he decided to run for President of the United States and ranted he wanted North aborted but Kim refused.

An insider told People over the weekend: ‘Kim is great. She has a Valentine’s Day celebration planned with her kids and family. She likes to make it special for the kids. She doesn’t have any contact with Kanye. It’s obvious that she is just focused on the future.’

It was recently claimed that Kanye is ‘less than thrilled’ that his divorce from the reality TV star will be broadcast on TV.

The trainee lawyer will reportedly discuss the end of her marriage on the last series of the family’s E! reality show and the Bound 2 star is not impressed.

A source said last month: ‘He is less than thrilled. She will continue to focus on her business empire. Kim has been in individual counselling and is at peace with where her life is headed.’

Kim and Kanye were in marriage counselling as they ‘tried to work through things’.

A source said of their counselling sessions: ‘Divorce has been discussed, but Kim wants more than anything for their relationship to work. There wasn’t anything specific that happened that led them to this point … They are 100 percent aligned when it comes to the kids.’

A source previously claimed Kim has accepted she and Kanye are just ‘not on the same page’ anymore and she is focusing her energy on her future.

The insider claimed: ‘They are just not on the same page when it comes to their future as a family. And Kim is okay with it.’

‘Kim knows what she wants to do with her life. She wants to keep living in LA, create the best life for the kids and focus on her work passions.’

Meanwhile, Kim recently sold 20 per cent of KKW Beauty to Coty Inc for a whopping $200 million.

The businesswoman – who launched the brand in 2017 – and the beauty giant finalised the major deal last month.

Kim said in a statement: ‘I’m so proud of how the KKW brand has grown over the past four years, and I look forward to working with Coty for the next phase of innovation, advancement, and the ability to bring new launches to customers all around the world. This relationship will allow me to lead the development of the creative elements that I specialise in, while benefiting from the incredible resources of an established company like Coty.’

The star is working on a skincare line for 2022 and is also expanding to other areas of beauty such as hair and nails.

‘Political move’: Sri Lanka urges rejection of UNHRC resolution

Sri Lanka subjected to ‘unprecedented propaganda campaign’, the foreign minister says in video address to the UN Human Rights Council.

‘Political move’: Sri Lanka urges rejection of UNHRC resolution

Sri Lanka has urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to reject a forthcoming resolution voicing “serious concern” over the “deteriorating” rights situation in the country.

Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told the council it would have to decide whether time should be spent raking over Sri Lanka or if the resolution was politically motivated.

Sri Lanka had been subjected to an “unprecedented propaganda campaign”, he said on Tuesday in a video address to the UN rights body, which is meeting virtually.

“It is regrettable that … elements working against Sri Lanka intend to table another country-specific resolution.”

Members should choose whether Sri Lanka “warrants the urgent attention of this council – or if this campaign is essentially a political move that contravenes the very values and principles on which this council has been established”, he added.

Last month, UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet called for an International Criminal Court investigation into Sri Lanka’s Tamil separatist conflict and sanctions against top generals and others accused of war crimes.

Bachelet accused Sri Lanka of reneging on promises to ensure justice for thousands of civilians killed in the final stages of the 37-year separatist war that ended in 2009.

The United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Malawi, Montenegro and North Macedonia submitted a draft resolution for consideration by the 47-member Human Rights Council next month.

It is the only one tabled so far during the 46th regular session of the council, which opened on Monday and is due to run until March 23.

It “expresses serious concern over emerging trends over the past year, which represent clear early warning signs of a deteriorating human rights situation in Sri Lanka”.

They include the “accelerating militarisation of civilian government functions, erosion of the independence of the judiciary … ongoing impunity and political obstruction of accountability for crimes … surveillance and intimidation of civil society and shrinking democratic space, arbitrary detentions, allegations of torture”.

It also voices concern that the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has hurt freedom of religion.

It urges Colombo to ensure a “thorough and impartial investigation and, if warranted, prosecution of all allegations of gross human rights violations and serious violations of international humanitarian law”.

Gunawardena said the resolution if passed, would only result in a significant loss of morale in countries fighting “terrorism”.

“The council must hold the scales even – not going by hearsay,” he said.

Lucky to be alive, Woods faces difficult recovery

In a career filled with remarkable comebacks, Tiger Woods faces perhaps his toughest recovery of all.

Lucky to be alive, Woods faces difficult recovery

The golf star was driving alone on a sweeping, downhill stretch of road through coastal Los Angeles suburbs when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. The crash caused “significant” injuries to Woods’ right leg, and he underwent what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer, said Woods shattered bones in his lower leg in multiple places. Some of his fractures went through the skin and were stabilized by a rod, while screws and pins were used for his ankle and foot injuries.

A statement on Woods’ Twitter account said he was awake and recovering.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was the first to arrive after a neighbor called 911.

Police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday on a Facebook livestream that it was “purely an accident” on a downhill section of road known for crashes.

Dr. Joseph Patterson, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, said injuries like Woods’ are among the most common seen in emergency rooms.

Patterson didn’t treat Woods and wouldn’t comment specifically about the golfer’s injuries but said the risk of infection is extremely high for patients with fractures that break the skin.

“Tissue can be exposed to bacteria, dirt and clothing. The outcomes can be a lot worse if that tissue gets infected,” Patterson said. Such open fractures can require multiple surgeries to repair.

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith suffered an open fracture to his lower leg while being tackled. He nearly lost the leg due to infection but made a remarkable recovery and played last season.

The crash was the latest setback for Woods, who at times has looked unstoppable with his 15 major championships and record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.

He won the 2008 U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures in his left leg. His personal life imploded on Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when he was caught having multiple extramarital affairs and crashed his vehicle near his Florida home. He returned to win his 11th award as PGA Tour player of the year and reach No. 1.

And then after four back surgeries that kept him out of golf for the better part of two years, he won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time, a victory that ranks among the great comebacks in the sport.

Now it’s no longer a matter of when he plays again — the Masters is seven weeks away — but if he plays again.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for Woods to give golf tips to celebrities on Discovery-owned GOLFTV. A tweet Monday showed him in a cart with comedian David Spade. He also worked with NBA great Dwyane Wade, who posted a video on Instagram.

“It was a great day,” Wade said Tuesday night on Turner Sports, where he is a studio analyst. “And I woke up today so proud to be able to post that moment for the world, like a little snippet of our moment together. And I took a nap, and I woke up to the news. So, you know, just like everybody out there, my thoughts and prayers are all to his loved ones.”

They have come from everywhere — Jack Nicklaus and Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson and former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Woods played golf with both presidents, and Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

Woods had a fifth back surgery, a microdiscectomy, on Dec. 23, just three days after he played the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, who now is 12. Woods also has a 13-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Woods was driving his courtesy vehicle from the Genesis Invitational when he crashed. Gonzalez, the deputy, does traffic enforcement on the road and said he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph (129 kph) in the downhill, 45-mph zone. Crashes are common.

Police said Woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. The sheriff says the airbags deployed and the inside of the SUV stayed mostly intact, which “gave him a cushion to survive the crash.”

Villanueva said Wednesday that the department hasn’t yet pulled information from the vehicle’s event data recorder, or “black box,” which would give details about speed and could be a factor.

In 2017, Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car parked awkwardly on the side of the road. He was arrested on a DUI charge and said he had an unexpected reaction to prescription medicine for his back pain. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and checked into a clinic to get help with prescription medication and a sleep disorder.

Woods hasn’t won since the Zozo Championship in Japan in fall 2019, and he’s reduced his playing schedule in recent years because of injuries. Besides his five back surgeries, he’s had four surgeries on his left knee.

Jerome Boateng probed for assault after tragic ex Kasia Lenhardt posted pic of ‘torn earlobe’ days before her death

COPS have reopened an assault investigation into the former Man City star Jerome Boateng after his ex-girlfriend was found dead.

Jerome Boateng probed for assault after tragic ex Kasia Lenhardt posted pic of ‘torn earlobe’ days before her death

Kasia Lenhardt, 25, was discovered in her apartment earlier this month while Boateng was away in Qatar with current club Bayern Munich.

The week before she died Boateng announced he had split from the stunning model and mother of one after 15 months together.

According to reports in Germany last night defender Boateng, 32, was being investigated over an alleged torn earlobe suffered by Kasia.

Images of the injury were shared on social media before being swiftly deleted just before Kasia was found in her Berlin apartment.

The Munich prosecutor’s office said they were investigating an allegation of willful bodily harm against Kasia which happened in October 2019.

Initially the investigation was dropped last June but Anne Leiding, from the prosecutor’s office, said: “The proceedings were resumed on February 10, 2021, because we received new information as part of the death investigation in Berlin that could give indications of a possible continuation of the proceedings.

“The investigation is not over yet.”

German news outlet Bild revealed that Kasia had been involved in a car accident in the footballer’s Mini on January 5, resulting in the vehicle being written off.

When they split, Jerome said it was time to “draw a line” and “apologise to everyone I’ve hurt”, including his ex-girlfriend Rebecca and their children.

Polish-born Kasia – who had a tattoo with the word ‘Jerome’ on her torso – responded by saying she had ended the relationship because of the World Cup winner’s “lies and constant infidelity”.

Kasia’s cryptic last Instagram post said: “Now is where you draw the line.

Enough.”

She also publicly branded the footballer “the devil” and promised to “speak up” and “fight back”, it has been reported.

Boateng told German newspaper Bild that Kasia had allegedly “destroyed” his previous relationship and blackmailed him.

He said: “Kasia became my girlfriend by destroying the relationship with my ex-girlfriend Rebecca and my family and blackmailed me.

“So I decided to stay with Kasia and try to make it work.”

An autopsy at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at Charité Berlin has revealed no evidence of third-party involvement.

She was found dead on the sixth birtgday of her son Noah through another relationship.

Last night there was no initial response from Boateng, who played for City in 2010-11.
