Republic Square welcomes tributes to José Eduardo dos Santos

Luanda – The Republic Square, in Luanda City, opens from 09h00 Monday for the homage to the former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, who died Friday in Spain, victim of an illness.



The Head of State, João Lourenço, is expected to be present at the spot in order to also pay tribute to José Eduardo dos Santos.

 

Speaking as the spokesman of the Interministerial Commission for Funeral Service, minister Marcy Lopes said that as from 2.00 pm the Republic Square will be open to the public, so that citizens may pay homage to the former Angolan Head of State.

 

Regarding the death of the former Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, the Government decreed seven days of National Mourning.

 

During this period, the National Flag is placed at half-mast and public performances and demonstrations are cancelled. The National Mourning period came into effect on Saturday.

 

José Eduardo dos Santos, who died at the age of 79, came to power in September 1979, following the death of the first Angolan President, António Agostinho Neto.

 

Mr Dos Santos was in office as President of the Republic for 38 years, until September 2017, when he was succeeded by the current Head of State, João Lourenço.

 

In addition to being President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos was Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and President of MPLA the ruling party since the proclamation of national independence on 11 November 1975.

 

The late president was also the minister of Foreign Affairs and other positions in the State and in the MPLA party. He led the process which ended with the signing of the Peace Agreement on 04 April 2022, following the death of the UNITA founding leader Jonas Savimbi.

UAE President sends condolences on the death of José Eduardo dos Santos

 Luanda - The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has expressed his dismay at the death of former Angolan President, José Eduardo dos Santos.



Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has sent a message of condolences to the Head of State, João Lourenço, following the death of José Eduardo dos Santos on Friday, in Spain, victim of illness.

 

 

With the same purpose, the vice president, prime minister and governor of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, also addressed a similar message to President João Lourenço.

 

The former Angolan President died at the age of 79. José Eduardo dos Santos came to power in September 1979, following the death of the First President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto.

 

He served as President of the Republic for 38 years, until September 2017, when he was succeeded by the current Head of State, João Lourenço. In addition to being President of the Republic, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and President of the MPLA, the party that has governed the country since the proclamation of national independence on 11 November 1975.

 

Mr Dos Santos’ political record also includes the position of minister of Foreign Affairs, and other functions in the State and in the MPLA. He led the process that culminated in the signing of the Peace Accords on 4 April 2002, following the death of the then founding leader of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi.

Navy commitment in fighting illegal immigration recognised

 Luanda - The Angolan Interior minister, Eugénio Laborinho, on Sunday acknowledged the efforts and patriotism of the Angolan Navy (MGA) in the fight against fuel smuggling and illegal immigration.



In a congratulatory note on the occasion to the 46th anniversary of the creation of this branch of the Angolan Armed Forces, the minister highlighted the role played by the MGA in guaranteeing coastal security, as well as in the fight against maritime piracy and illegal fishing.

According to the statement, as an organ of the Angolan Armed Forces, the navy has carried out missions alongside the other defence and security bodies, protecting the country's water resources, via its naval regions.

He said that the MGA was set up soon after national independence, embracing the challenges of defending the country and the inviolability of the territory, along some 1,600 kilometres of maritime border, against external aggressions and invasions.

The MGA was created on July 10th, 1976, by the first President of Angola, António Agostinho Neto.

Covid-19: Angola vaccinates over 5,000 people

 


Luanda- Angola has vaccinated, in the last 24 hours, 5,438 people.

According to the daily bulletin released Sunday, the provinces of Angola are Uige (2082), Cuanza Sul (1135), Huila (478), Bié (423) and Cunene (302).

The cumulative total is 21 073 061 doses administered, of which 13.4 million with one dose, 7.3 million with full doses and 899,735 with booster doses.

Food Reserve to cause price drop in commodities

 Luanda - The main products of the Basic Food Basket will register a generalised drop of 39.7%, from 11 to 17 July this year, compared to November of last year, due to the activation of the Strategic Food Reserve (REA).



Special emphasis goes to wheat flour which is falling to 64.2% and maize flour to 56.5%, as prices on the international market fell by 0.5% during the week under assessment.

 

According to the reference prices of the Basic Food Basket, it is foreseen that the price of a 25 kg bag of wheat flour, which in November 2021 was costing 23.33 kwanzas, went down to 8.250 kwanzas.

 

Maize flour went from 13.800 to 6.000 kwanzas.

 

The price of 50 kg of sugar, which was costing kz 24.200 is now at 18.950 kwanzas, 25 kg bag of Thai rice went from kz 11.737 to 7.000 kwanzas, while 25 kg bag of Myanmar rice went from 10.000 kwanzas to 6.600 kwanzas.

 

The price of 12 litres of soya oil, which in November 2021 was 11.200 kwanzas, is now 11.100 kwanzas, while 25 kg of Pinto beans went down from 24.000 kwanzas to 16.000 kwanzas.

 

A box of 10 kg of chicken thighs went down from 10.190 to 7.100 kwanzas.

 

The Strategic Food Reserve (REA) is an initiative of the Government that aims to regulate the market and influence the lowering of prices of essential food products that make up the Basic Food Basket.

 

Among the products made available immediately are sugar, rice and chicken thigh.

 

Therefore, REA will guarantee the acquisition, storage and distribution of over 520,000 tonnes of food products, part of which are already produced and transformed locally in job-generating industries, with an expected impact on price reductions of around 5% to the final consumer.
