The six companies, which had the capacity to collect only 60% of the waste produced in the capital, lost their licenses as a result of the suspension of public contracts, by the provincial government of Luanda.

Ghana: Domestic violence affects more women in rural areas -Police

The Northern Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit(DOVVSU), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Emmanuel Holortu, has disclosed that Women and Children in rural environments experience more domestic and family violence than their counterparts in urban areas.

Domestic violence affects more women in rural areas -Police

He said in the rural areas, about 80 percent of victims do not report domestic violence cases to DOVVSU due to social description.

Mr Holortu said this, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tamale, and said that out of the 20 percent of cases reported to DOVVSU, only about one percent of the perpetrators are processed for court and are convicted.

“There is a common view in rural communities that “family problems” such as domestic and family violence are not talked about, which serves to silence women’s experience of domestic and family violence and discourage them from revealing violent acts and abuse to the police”.

He said the fear of stigma, shame, community gossip, and the lack of perpetrator accountability, put off women from seeking help from the law enforcing authorities.

DSP Holortu said the lack of privacy was due to high likelihood that the Police, health professionals and domestic and family violence workers know both the victim and perpetrator and this can hold back womens’ willingness to use local services to resolve issues at home.

He said these issues affect responses to domestic and family violence in non-urban communities, as well as women’s ability to seek help and access services in these communities.

He mentioned that poor understanding of domestic and family violence by health, social and legal service providers at the regional, rural and remote communities have been identified as significant obstacles for survivors of domestic and family violence to seek redress.

He urged government and other organisations to enhance the work of the Police with more logistics to enable them to successfully respond to domestic violence issues.

UK agency: Vaccination rates lowest among older Black people

LONDON (AP) — New figures from Britain’s statistics agency showed Monday that older people from Black African backgrounds are more than seven times as likely as white Britons to have not received a coronavirus vaccine.

UK agency: Vaccination rates lowest among older Black people

More than 30 million people in the U.K. — or about 57% of all adults — have received a first vaccine dose. But significant concerns remain about lower vaccination uptakes and hesitancy to take the jab among some ethnic minority groups.

The Office for National Statistics said Monday that among people 70 years old or older, the lowest vaccination rates were seen among people identifying as Black African, at 58.8%, and Black Caribbean, at 68.7%. The vaccination rate among Bangladeshis was 72.7% and for Pakistanis it was 74%.

That is markedly lower than the rate among white British people in the same age group, which stood at 91.3%. The agency didn’t provide an explanation of why there was such a difference.

Overall, 90% of all residents in England in the age group have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The agency’s statistical modelling found that the odds of people from Black African backgrounds not having had the coronavirus jab were 7.4 times greater than the odds for the white British group. It noted that the odds remained higher even after age, sex, social-demographic characteristics and underlying health conditions were accounted for.

Lawmaker Layla Moran, who chairs the all-party parliamentary group on the coronavirus, said the figures were “deeply alarming” because research has shown that many ethnic minorities face a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19.

Monday’s figures also showed a markedly lower vaccination rate in the poorest areas.

It was the first time the statistics agency published analysis on vaccination rates in older people broken down by factors like age, sex, ethnicity and deprivation.
