WHO declares Africa free of polio

The World Health Organization has declared Africa free of naturally occurring polio. The continent’s last case was reported in northern Nigeria four years ago.

The announcement is a significant step in the 30-year-long campaign to eradicate the disease worldwide. Only Afghanistan and Pakistan have polio infections now. However, the coronavirus pandemic is interrupting vaccination efforts.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Nigeria’s capital Abuja.
