On Tuesday afternoon, riders of commercial motorbikes a.k.a. okada got into an altercation with law enforcement along the Apapa-Oshodi expressway in Lagos, Nigeria.
According to those who witnessed the scene, members of the Lagos state taskforce were on the expressway to enforce the ban on major roads which had been in effect since early on in the year. However, the Okada riders resisted arrest and attacked law enforcement personnel.
Irked with the display of power and of course the attitude and manner by which they (Task Force) seized and maltreated their members, a large number of Okada riders blocked Apple junction and burnt tires and anything they could lay their hands on, making it difficult for motorists and passerby to access the road.
thugs around the area also joined the Okada drivers in wreaking havoc by chasing the task force personnel from the area as a free-for-all ensued. Bonfires were then erected on the expressway as chaos engulfed the entire and surrounding neighborhoods.
Okada riders have since returned to major expressways, even though it is illegal in Lagos.
The commercial motor-bikers also drive against traffic at break-neck speed on busy expressways, endangering the lives of motorists and pedestrians alike.
Some Nigerians believe situations like this are a result of the breakdown of law and order associated with the end sars protests.
