BURKINA FASO – Fighting erupts as pushback against coup plotters intensifies

OUAGADOUGOU – Forces friendly to President Paul-Henri Damiba, buoyed by his refusal to step down as ordered by leaders of the coup attempt, have mounted a fierce counter-offensive to push back against the coup attempt.

Residents of the capital city are reported to be fleeing their homes amidst stray bullets from the fierce fighting. it is unclear which side would eventually come out victorious. What is clear is that the coup attempt is reported to be anything but successful.

French soldiers are also reported to be in the mix fighting for the moment to restore the presidency of Paul-Henri Damiba.

Armed soldiers in fatigues and masks appeared on television in Burkina Faso on Friday night to confirm the ouster of President Paul-Henri Damiba, the second coup in the troubled West African country this year.

The announcement capped a day that began with gunfire near a military camp in the capital Ouagadougou, an explosion near the presidential palace, and interruptions to state television programming.

But DNT can report that there is no clear conclusion to the coup attempt and that fighting abates in the capital.

Please stay tuned for updates from DNT News with correspondence reports from Julius Ouya.
