The Ivorian Prime Minister Patrick Achi abruptly resigned on Wednesday along with members of his government citing President Outtarra’s intention to reshuffle and slim down his administration..
Achi’s resignation followed a meeting in Yamousssoukro, the Ivorian Capital at which President Allassane Outtarra is reported to have insisted on a slimmer government and agreed to include some opposition members in the administration.
Observers suspect a long-standing distrust between President Outtarra and his vice president as having finally boiled over and led to Achi’s resignation.
The now former vice president is of the Akan ethnicity in an administration headed by Northerner Outtarra and populated at key positions by fellow northerners.
The three people rumored to be the favorites to replace Achi are all of the Northern ethnicity, which gives Outtarra the opportunity to skip them and name an Akan as the next VP to quell the rumors.
Compounding the distrust is the fact that Patrick Achi’s was a member of the opposition party of Henri Konan Bedie before he switched to the ruling party.
The next presidential election is not until 2025.
