Southern Libya court of Appeal “Sebha Court of Appeal “ on Thursday December 2,2021, overturned the Libyan electoral commission’s decision to deny Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former president Mohammed Gaddafi from contesting presidency.
The ruling ordered for the immediate reestablishment of the son of the former Libyan dictator to be able to run for the country’s December 24,2021 elections.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi had challenged the decision of the electoral authority in Libya for disqualifying him for what Libyan authorities said were war crimes committed during the uprising against his father more than 10 years ago.
In the disqualification process, the electoral commission had quoted an articles of the electoral law which clearly stipulate that candidates “must not have been sentenced for a dishonourable crime” and must present a clean criminal record.
But lawyer for Saif ai-Islam Gaddafi “Khaled al-Zaydi” ,confirmed to that the court in Sebha had accepted his client’s appeal, and ruled in his favor.
