Multiple investment partnership is needed to achieve Agenda 2030 as the Government alone cannot do it, The Acting Country Director, WaterAid Ghana (WAG), Mr.
George Yorke, has observed.
He said Goal 6 (Access to clean water and sanitation) of Agenda 2030 which was an integration of poverty, hunger and health, needed double efforts from the private sector and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) for it to be realized.
“We have ten years to go and double efforts from the Government, NGOs and private sectors investing to achieve agenda 2030 through partnership is what is needed,” Mr. Yorke said at the signing event of funding agreement between Guinness Ghana Breweries (GGBPLC) and WAG in Accra on Thursday.
The 1.3 million second phase water project in Jirapa in the Upper West and Garu in the Upper East Region signing agreement had been necessitated following the successful completion and utilization of a first phase water project in the Garu District.
Serving over 11, 000 community members and health facilities in the district currently, it was at an initial cost of GHC508, 000 and with working on it spanning from February to June 2021.
The new project, which would take eight months to be completed and starts from November 2021, is expected to be completed in June 2022. It would help beneficiaries access Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Infrastructure for healthcare facilities (WASHI-H) Project and the various communities as a whole.
Mr. Yorke pledged WAG’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the project and called for more of such partnerships.
Speaking at the signing, Mr. Felix Baidoo, the Sustainability and Responsibility Manager at GGBPLC, said GGBPLC was recommitting itself to the partnership which started in February to not only provide safe and reliable water for individuals and communities but to replenish water for production and contribute to climate change, SDGs and water.
He said GGBPLC had since 2007 looked beyond sourcing and was now safeguarding the environment through projects and programmes.
Lauding WAG and contractors for the impressive work done, Mr. Baidoo charged the two bodies to recount and rededicate towards the two projects especially when their initial beneficiary target was 2,500 but was serving 11, 000 presently.
Mr Sampson Tettey, the Interim Senior Technical Advisor for WaterAid Africa, called for capacity building of the local people on management and understanding of WASH.
WaterAid is an international NGO dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people.
With the vision of having a world where everyone has access to safe water and effective sanitation, the Ghana programme was established in 1985 and it has since been operating through partnerships with local NGOs. The NGOs, eight of them at the moment, perform the day to day implementation and project management functions while WaterAid provides financial and technical support.
