DNT Yaounde – The United States Senate yesterday approved Biden nominee Christopher John Lamora as the new Ambassador to Cameroon. But there is one problem – Ambassador Lamora is gay and homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon.
Lamora is reported to have decided to leave his husband behind in the States to take up his new appointment in Yaounde raising the question as to whether the status of homosexuality or the practice of it is what is illegal in the central African country.
Lamora will join Isi Yanouka, Israeli Ambassador to Cameroon who is also suspected to be a member of the LGBTQ community.
It remains to be seen how this seeming diplomatic row would be settled. Cameroonian President Paul Biya is said to be a staunch opponent of the LGBTQ community.
How Lamora presents his credentials to Biya remains to be seen.
