Covid-19: Rhodes University records first COVID-19 case on campus

Rhodes University records first COVID-19 case on campus

A Rhodes University staff member has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The member of staff in the Finance Division is currently in isolation and is being treated under the supervision of the Provincial Department of Health. We wish our affected colleague strength and a speedy recovery.

As per the Department of Health (DOH) and National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) guidelines, members of staff who have been in contact with the affected staff member have been informed and are currently in self-quarantine. If a member of the Rhodes University community begins to experience symptoms, they should contact their health provider for further evaluation.

Rhodes University reiterates its commitment to everyday preventive measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. All staff and students are urged to continue the practice of hygiene, physical distancing and all other infection control measures. With physical distancing as an important strategy, staff members are encouraged to work off-campus as the nature of their duties allows.

Access to the affected areas which are the Health Care Centre, the Research Finance Office and Human Resources is prohibited until all applicable Covid-19 protocols have been effected.

Staff and students are encouraged to refer to the University’s protocols and guidelines to help protect themselves, their families, colleagues and friends. The protocols and guidelines can be accessed here:

Rhodes University, like all other academic institutions in the country and worldwide, finds itself in a rapidly changing and unsettling environment. We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic is creating uncertainty, apprehension and concern on an institutional and personal level. The University wishes to reassure all staff and students that we continue to take every step possible to ensure the health and safety of the Rhodes University community.

Please take your safety and measures for your personal well-being seriously.

ISSUED BY THE COMMUNICATIONS AND ADVANCEMENT DIVISION ON BEHALF OF RHODES UNIVERSITY
