Covid-19 updates: Angola records eight new coronavirus cases

 Angola reports eight new infections of covid-19, of which five were imported and three were  locally transmitted.

    Angola registers 8 more cases, 5 imported and 3 local transmission.The Secretary of State for Public Health, Franco Mufinda, reported that in the last 24 hours, there were 8 more positive cases, 5 imported and 3 from local transmission. 

    According to the governor, who spoke at the usual press conference to update data on covid - 19 in the country, it is about 6 male and 2 female individuals, aged between 22 and 42 years. The imported cases, 4 are from Russia, 1 from Lebanon. The cases of local transmission are from the Hoji Ya Henda sanitary fence. 

    Franco Mufinda reported that the country also recorded the recovery of 19 people, “the largest number ever” " he said. A 92-year-old from the Multiperfil sanitary fence, in whom covid-19 was detected, passed away this morning, according to the ruler, not because of covid-19, but due to a stroke. 

    Thus, the epidemiological picture of covid - 19 in the country adds up to 138(+8) confirmed positive cases, being 71 (+8) active, 61 recovered (+19) and 6 deaths (+1). The number of cases of local transmission is 75 (+3) and the imported ones are 63 (+5) cases.  

    From the laboratory, have been collected so far, 14,464 samples, of which 138 positive, 14,145 negative and 186 are in processing. In institutional quarantines there are 549 people, 288 people were discharged, suspicious cases investigated are 459 and direct or occasional contacts under surveillance are 1,199. 

The African context

    

Africa today overcame the barrier of six thousand killed by covid-19, recording 6,040, more 284 than on Friday, and counts more than 225 thousand infections, according to official data released by the African Union. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected has increased from 216,446 to 225,105, that is, 8,659 more sick people. 

    Globally, the new coronavirus has already infected more than 7.6 million people and killed at least 426,029 people worldwide, according to the balance sheet made by the agency France Presse, based on official sources. 

    According to data compiled by AFP up to 11: 00 am today, there have been at least 426,029 deaths in 7,663,680 cases of infection in 196 countries and territories since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, of which at least 3,441,600 are now considered cured.

O secretário de Estado para a Saúde Pública, Mufinda, informou que nas últimas 24 horas, foram registados mais 8 casos positivos, sendo 5 importados e 3 de transmissão local.

Segundo o governante, que falava na habitual conferência de imprensa para atualização dos dados sobre a covid-19 no país, trata-se de 6 indivíduos do sexo masculino e 2 do sexo feminino, em idades compreendidas entre 22 e 42 anos. Os casos importados, 4 são provenientes da Rússia, 1 proveniente da Líbano. Os casos de transmissão local, são da cerca sanitária do Hoji Ya Henda.

Franco Mufinda informou que o país registou igualmente a recuperação de 19 pessoas, “o maior número de sempre”, disse.

Um idoso de 92 anos, da cerca sanitária da Multiperfil, em quem foi detetado a covid-19, faleceu na manhã de hoje, de acordo com o governante, não por causa da covid-19, mas devido a um acidente vascular cerebral (AVC).

Assim sendo o quadro epidemiológico da covid-19 no país, passa a somar 138(+8) casos positivos confirmados, sendo 71 (+8) ativos, 61 recuperados (+19) e 6 óbitos (+1). O número de casos de transmissão local são 75 (+3) e os importados são 63 (+5) casos.

Applications are invited for the National Research Foundation COVID-19 Africa Rapid Grant Fund 2020. The Rapid Grant Fund seeks to contribute to the African regional and continental response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rapid Grant Fund seeks to:

• Contribute to the African regional and continental response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Support knowledge generation and translation to inform diagnostics, prevention and treatment of COVID19 on the continent.
• Strengthen African regional and continental science engagement efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Leverage existing, strong multilateral collaborations in support of Africa’s consolidated response to the COVID-19 pandemic and attract new collaborations from international partners.

Scope

The Rapid Grant Fund supports three strands in respect of research and science engagement:

• Research
• Science engagement: call to science and health journalists and communicators, and
• Science engagement: call to science advisers.

Funding

• The Rapid Grant Fund is administered by the NRF South Africa, and has initial total funding of up to USD4.75million, with scope for additional funding from international funders and some SGCs.

Eligibility

• Researchers and science engagement practitioners from the following countries are eligible to apply: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and in the context of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Nigeria and South Africa. For the research strand and applicable only to Nigeria and South Africa, only ARUA member universities will be eligible to participate. For the two strands on science engagement, practitioners across all the countries, including Nigeria and South Africa may apply.
• Applications from women applicants, people living with disabilities and first responders to COVID-19, as principal investigators are encouraged.
• In addition, diversity, including sex and gender differences, exist across all COVID-19 dimensions. Research and science engagement proposals must demonstrate considerations of diversity, including sex as a biological variable and gender as a socio-cultural factor in research projects and in science engagement approaches.

The first-quarter rout in emerging-market assets has left the majority of African currencies undervalued, with three exceptions: the Egyptian pound, Nigerian naira and Kenyan shilling.

Angola’s kwanza is the most undervalued currency, followed by Zambia’s kwacha and South Africa’s rand.
