President addresses drought combat projects

Luanda - Angolan head of State João Lourenço Monday in Luanda discussed with the CEO of Power China International Group Limited the issues related to Canal Water projects from the rivers to drought-hit localities in the provinces of Huila, Namibe and Cuanza Sul.

The Chinese company’s CEOJi Xiaoyong, told the press at the end of the audience that the projects are in their preliminary phase, under the aegis of engineers from Power China.

He said that the projects are similar to the engineering works of the water transfer system from the Cunene River, in the Cafu zone, to the Ombala yo Mungo, Ndombendola and Namacunde villages.

The manager said that these are projects, mainly, linked to the fight against drought in these three provinces, adding that they were working at a preliminary stage, but he would not mention the costs.

Inaugurated last April by the President of Republic, João Lourenço, Cafu Canal is a water abstraction and transfer system from Cunene River to various villages, through a 160-kilometer pipeline.

Severe drought in the south of the country caused hundreds of deaths in the most critical areas of the country, and hundreds of other families were left without food, forcing the emergence of thousands of displaced people and refugees.

It also claimed thousands of the lives of the cattle as well as thousands of children were forced to drop out of school and suffer from dangerous malnutrition. More than a million people in central and southern Angola in need of emergency food aid.
