The ladies of the Ghanaian Diaspora Returnees from the United States beat their UK counterparts in the first penalty shootout by the score of 4 to 3.
Organized by Disapora Network Television (DNT) and RiteSports, the penalties served as the curtain raiser for the men’s game which followed minutes later.
The victory, however, did not come without controversy. Master of ceremonies, Yaw Sakyi, also the CEO of RiteSports, announced the rules of the penalty kicks that each of the five player will kick two to make a total of ten.
The UK team apparently were in such pre-game celebratory mood that neither of the co-captains heard it. Thus after the first five penalty kicks the UK team began celebrating as the score stood at 3-2 in their favor.
But after the professional officiating team cleared up the confusion and the second set of penalties proceeded, the Brits could not find the net again while the “Yanks” score two of the next four to win at an aggregate score of 4 to 3 without needing to kick their tenth and last kick.
The scorers on the UK side were Ameba Amoah aka Ejisu Broni (1) and Natasha Maureen Donkor (1), and Elizabeth (1)
The Yanks were powered ahead by Hajia Fatima (2), Roe Fynn (1), Hannah Acquah (1)
