The Chairwoman of the USA branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Obaa Yaa Frimpong has bluntly called out Members of Parliament whose opposing stance on the newly-gazetted Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill have nothing to do with the allegiance of dual citizens.
According to the “Iron Lady”, These MPs are so wrapped up in preserving their own personal interest in perpetual occupancy of Parliamentary seats that they have no care that the children that their wives are sent to United States and other developed countries to bear for citizenships would one day be excluded from political participation in Ghana due to their stance on the Bill.
The NPPUSA boss went as far as to call into question the patriotism of these MPs because, knowing what the Ghanaian diaspora has proven over the years as to what impactful difference they are capable of making, denying them participation at certain levels solely for reasons of self Preservation, amounts to sacrificing the nation’s interest for their own.
“I don’t think these are people who love Ghana as they claim to love Ghana,” Obaa Yaa continued. “Because if you love Ghana, and you want the best for Ghana, and you want the long term prosperity of Ghana, there’s no way you’re going to be exclusive” of Ghanaians who have proven themselves beyond any reasonable doubt of their allegiance and their contributions to nation building.
“These people want to make being in Parliament some kind of a profession for as long as they can be there and shut the door on everybody,” Obaa Yaa said.
To the claim that some MPs push that “Ghanaians don’t want people with dual allegiance at certain positions, the NPPUSA Chair said it was not true.
Obaa Yaa pointed out that her experience in some rural parts of the Northern Region where her organization is working with village women tells her that the rank and file in Ghana does not care what passport one holds so long as one can help them out of their poverty.
“Some of these women don’t even know what a dual citizen is, but they welcome them into their communities and work with them to change their lives.
The opposition to the Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill is currently going through the Parliamentary process and needs two-thirds of ‘Yay” votes and subsequent presidential assent to become law. Proponents of the Bill have made it clear that it is a non-partisan Bill and thus are lobbying MPs of both sides of the isle to support it.
The full interview airs on DNT’s Diaspora Weekly on Saturday September 4 at 9am.
