The China Town Shopping Centre in Luanda announced Monday losses of around one billion Kwanzas during the four-day shutdown, due to the detection of two positive cases of Covid-19.
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Town, Jack Huang, who was speaking during a press conference to clarify the work stoppage due to the cases registered on July 20, the statistics refer only to the stores controlled by the management of the center, lacking the balance sheet of private traders to detail the overall figures.
He also indicated that the suspension of labour activities had a serious impact on business and the survival of tenants, as well as on Angolan workers.
Despite this loss, he stressed, no employees were dismissed, but the presence of workers was reduced by 50 per cent, as advised by the country's authorities.
According to the Viana Municipal Health Director, Abreu Pecamena, so far 1,700 workers have been tested, among Angolans and foreigners, and 63 have tested positive.
With more than 300 stores belonging to Angolan, Chinese, USA, Portuguese, Turkish and Lebanese traders, the China Town has more than four thousand national workers.
The Shopping Centre offered the Viana Municipal Administration 5 million Kwanzas to support social activities, as well as 1,200 boxes of masks.
