DAY 5 - Children's Art Challenge to drive the SDGs | SDG 5 - Gender Equality | Preparations for COP 28

In focus: Sustainable Development Goal 5

Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to our sustainable platform!

The heroes of our program are very creative African children, and today they painted SDG 5 - Gender Equality.

Our children are sharing their inspirational creations about how to limit climate change. We invite school-aged children to unleash their creativity and envision a sustainable future through their art. Together, let's paint a brighter tomorrow for our planet.”

We believe in an Africa where girls and boys can reach their full potential, where men and women contribute equally to the development of their societies. We believe that there will be gender equality in all spheres of life and an engaged and empowered youth.

Women are key contributors to global economies and play a critical role in the development of their societies. Without the equal and effective participation of women in all spheres of socio-political and economic life, the UN SDG 5 might not be realized.

Giving women increased access to resources can reduce vulnerability and create more resilient households and communities. In addition, involving women in decision-making can help drive the adoption of climate change policies and strengthen mitigation and adaptation efforts by ensuring they benefit the needs of women.

DID YOU KNOW?

Order of Engineers of Portugal formalizes Gender Equality Certification process and declares 2024 OE Year for Gender Equality.

When we sit down to talk about Africa, we understand that there is still a large gender gap across the technology, engineering and physical sciences disciplines despite a number of efforts over the past three decades to address this. Creating a more diverse workforce including a better gender balance is important in order to meet the skills need of the future.

Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

There has been progress over the last decades: More girls are going to school, fewer girls are forced into early marriage, more women are serving in parliament and positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality.

Despite these gains, many challenges remain: discriminatory laws and social norms remain pervasive, women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of political leadership, and 1 in 5 women and girls between the ages of 15 and 49 report experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner within a 12-month period.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic could reverse the limited progress that has been made on gender equality and women’s rights.  The coronavirus outbreak exacerbates existing inequalities for women and girls across every sphere – from health and the economy, to security and social protection.

Women play a disproportionate role in responding to the virus, including as frontline healthcare workers and carers at home. Women’s unpaid care work has increased significantly as a result of school closures and the increased needs of older people. Women are also harder hit by the economic impacts of COVID-19, as they disproportionately work in insecure labour markets. Nearly 60 per cent of women work in the informal economy, which puts them at greater risk of falling into poverty.

The pandemic has also led to a steep increase in violence against women and girls. With lockdown measures in place, many women are trapped at home with their abusers, struggling to access services that are suffering from cuts and restrictions. Emerging data shows that, since the outbreak of the pandemic, violence against women and girls – and particularly domestic violence – has intensified.

Targets

  • 5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
  • 5.2 Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation
  • 5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation
  • 5.4 Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate
  • 5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decisionmaking in political, economic and public life
  • 5.6 Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences
  • 5.A Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance and natural resources, in accordance with national laws
  • 5.B Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women
  • 5.C Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels

Minister announces adhesion to the Methane Agreement at COP 28

Dubai - The Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, announced on Thursday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), that Angola will sign the Methane Agreement, at COP 28, which aims to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.

The global initiative coordinated by the United Nations (UN) is dedicated to quantifying and managing methane emissions, mainly in the oil industry, with a focus on mitigating climate change.

According to the minister, in statements to the press, methane released directly into the atmosphere is more powerful than CO2, however, with a shorter useful life.

She recalled that the initiative did not go ahead at COP 27, in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, because the country did not have "comfortable conditions for this purpose".

She said that Angola, with this accession because comfortable conditions already exist, will have an improved participation in relation to the others, as it will also bring initiatives aimed at improving the world climate.

She said that, we also present ideas to make the world greener, with more environmentally friendly agricultural practices, as well as the energy transition, that is, the change from thermal energy to clean sources.

On the other hand, Ana Paula de Carvalho highlighted that the opening day of the event is dedicated to meetings between ministerial delegations present at the meeting promoted by the United Nations.

"After the Summit of Heads of States and Governments on the 1st and 2nd, from Sunday onwards, we will have thematic days, where Angola will present, among others, topics on security and peace, health, environment, miners and oil and gas", she highlighted.

She highlighted that the environment ends up being a transversal sector, hence the presence of several ministerial departments to focus on their achievements in relation to climate change.

On the 10th, he said, after the presentation of the themes, the parties will have two days to negotiate, in order to obtain financing to advance their actions aimed at improving the quality of the environment, water, air and soil.

The 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, also called COP (Conference of the Parties) 28, began this Thursday in Dubai, UAE, and ends on December 12th. Sharm el-Sheik, in Egypt, last year, passed the testimony to Dubai that "it is required" to make a global assessment of the world's climate situation, after eight years of the Paris Meeting.

At COP 21 in Paris, in December 2015, the so-called Paris Agreement emerged, in which almost all countries in the world committed to limiting the increase in the global average temperature to two degrees Celsius (2ºC) above pre-war values. Industrial, and preferably not exceed 1.5ºC.

DAY 4 - Children's Art Challenge to drive the SDGs | SDG 4 - Preparation for COP 28

Goal 4: Quality Education

"If the poor cannot come to education, education must reach them at the plough, in the factory, everywhere.”

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the fourth day of our Children's Art Challenge to drive the SDGs. Today we are with rural children!

Education is a critical agent in addressing the issue of climate change, it also has a hugely important role to play in driving the transition to a sustainable future.

Children from rural communities participate in the acceleration of the SDGs

Our children are sharing their inspirational creations about how to limit climate change. We invite school-aged children to unleash their creativity and envision a sustainable future through their art. Together, let's paint a brighter tomorrow for our planet.”

Our work targets children, youth and women around the world - the next generation of consumers and change-makers to show that sustainable living is easy, cool and fun.

Goal 4: Quality Education

Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. Over the past decade, major progress was made towards increasing access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, particularly for girls. Nevertheless, about 260 million children were still out of school in 2018 — nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group. And more than half of all children and adolescents worldwide are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics.

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, a majority of countries announced the temporary closure of schools, impacting more than 91 per cent of students worldwide. By April 2020, close to 1.6 billion children and youth were out of school. And nearly 369 million children who rely on school meals needed to look to other sources for daily nutrition.

Never before have so many children been out of school at the same time, disrupting learning and upending lives, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised. The global pandemic has far-reaching consequences that may jeopardize hard won gains made in improving global education.

Targets

  • 4.1 By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and Goal-4 effective learning outcomes
  • 4.2 By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and preprimary education so that they are ready for primary education
  • 4.3 By 2030, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university
  • 4.4 By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship
  • 4.5 By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations
  • 4.6 By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy
  • 4.7 By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development
  • 4.A Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all
  • 4.B By 2020, substantially expand globally the number of scholarships available to developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and African countries, for enrolment in higher education, including vocational training and information and communications technology, technical, engineering and scientific programmes, in developed countries and other developing countries
  • 4.C By 2030, substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing states

Join me and millions of others UNITING to #ACT4SDGs for a more just, equitable, peaceful, sustainable, and green future.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to our sustainable platform!

My name is Sofonie Dala, I am an Angolan sustainability impact entrepreneur, founder of the startup Talentos Multiplus (Multi Talents).

We use our unique digital platforms to raise ambition around the SDGs and reach the most vulnerable first, while also offering non-formal training in rural and urban communities to equip them with essential skills to combat climate crises.

We have an inspiring and influential team that is raising global awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and the need for accelerated action.

Our work targets children, youth and women around the world - the next generation of consumers and change-makers to show that sustainable living is easy, cool and fun.

Today I am pleased to present to you our new challenge "Children's Art Challenge to drive the SDGs". This campaign will showcase the potential of African children. Here we will prove what it means to be truly African.

Our children are sharing their inspirational creations about how to limit climate change. We invite school-aged children to unleash their creativity and envision a sustainable future through their art. Together, let's paint a brighter tomorrow for our planet.”

This is the most creative-sustainable campaign for African children to accelerate the 17 sustainable development goals. This campaign also aims to show our support and contribution to the two major events of the moment:
COP28 UAE and YOUTHCONNEKT AFRICA (YCA) SUMMIT, 2023 KENYA.

Our work built on a culture of smart strategic thinking and creative innovation, inspires and guides youth action for both individual and systems change that enables sustainable lifestyles.

We believe in an Africa where girls and boys can reach their full potential, where men and women contribute equally to the development of their societies. We believe that there will be gender equality in all spheres of life and an engaged and empowered youth.

We are training children because they are the future of Tomorrow. We want to see a hundred Mandela in the coming years. We want to create a model that can be replicated.

We also agree that women are key contributors to global economies and play a critical role in the development of their societies. Without the equal and effective participation of women in all spheres of socio-political and economic life, the UN SDG 5 might not be realized.

Therefore, we are creating a community cooperative with a sustainable activity model that empowers women living below the poverty line.
