Shaping Futures: The Role of Education in Climate Action and Sustainability
Sofonie Dala: A Chevening Scholar's Journey
Sofonie Dala, a proud Chevening scholar from Angola, found herself in the heart of London on VE Day 80. Her visit was spurred by an invitation to attend the Annual Gladwyn Lecture 2025 featuring the esteemed Prof. Daniella Tilbury—an event that would connect her with fellow scholars and leaders in sustainability education.
The Annual Gladwyn Lecture 2025
The Council for Education in the Commonwealth was thrilled to host Prof. Daniella Tilbury, a luminary in the realm of sustainability. Known for her pivotal roles in shaping educational frameworks, Prof. Tilbury's insights were invaluable. Her lecture, titled "Facing the Future: Education for Climate and Sustainable Development across the Commonwealth," addressed the crucial intersections of education, climate change, and technology.
Transformative Power of Education
Prof. Tilbury's lecture critically explored how education can adapt to meet the challenges of climate change. She emphasized the role of AI and emerging technologies in fostering sustainable practices, while also cautioning against potential pitfalls like misinformation and inequality. Her message resonated deeply, particularly with those who still doubt AI's potential to revolutionize education.
A Day of Remembrance: VE Day Concert
Later that day, King Charles III delivered a heartfelt speech honoring veterans at the VE Day concert held at London's Horse Guards Parade. The event featured vibrant performances from artists like Fleur East and Freya Ridings, culminating in a day filled with remembrance and gratitude.
Following a poignant two-minute silence across the nation, royal family members, including King Charles and the Prince of Wales, laid wreaths at the grave of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.
A Moment of Reflection at King’s Cross
At King’s Cross station, the atmosphere was electric as the city observed the two-minute silence. As Sofonie exited her train, the ringing of the bell echoed, prompting everyone to pause and reflect.
Representatives from various nations stood in solidarity, creating a powerful moment of remembrance that transcended borders.
Exploring Richmond Park: An African Escape
After the emotionally charged events, Sofonie ventured to Richmond Park, where she felt transported to the African savanna. The lush greenery and vibrant wildlife reminded her of home.

Comic Moments: A Hilarious Encounter
Guys, you won’t believe what happened to me! After attending the celebration at Westminster Abbey, I wandered around, eager to kill time before the afternoon lecture. I thought, "Why not visit the famous Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub on Fleet Street? I bet they have some medieval cheese!"
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is an historic gem of a pub on Fleet Street, built on the site of a 13th-century Carmelite monastery. Since 1538, a pub has stood here, and it was rebuilt around 1667 after the Great Fire of London.
So, I walked in, half-expecting a cheese platter fit for royalty. When I asked the barman to introduce me to their cheese selection, he chuckled and said, “Oh, it’s just a name! We only sell drinks here!” Can you imagine my face? I came for cheese and left with a pint! Hahaha!
