Angola: Tackling Discrimination Against Women On Top of Government's Agenda

The secretary of State for Family and Women Promotion, Elsa Barber, declared last Thursday, in Luanda, that preventing and combating gender-based violence is one of the challenges and priorities of the Angolan government.



Speaking at the Brochure launch session that disseminates and gives visibility to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, he said that the government has been working on raising awareness and mobilizing families and in dealing with cases that emerge.

She mentioned that integrated actions are increasing and they have already obtained satisfactory results in the areas of women's empowerment and training, in their social integration and in the different levels of decision-making.

The secretary of State added that the National Development Plan PDN2018-2020 includes specific actions for women, with a view to promoting opportunities and enhancing the role of women in the family, social, political and economic fields.

She recalled that the Executive counts on the participation of civil society organizations, individuals and people interested in defending women's rights in order to strengthen cooperation relations, with a view to satisfactorily meeting the challenges assumed by the state, aiming at the well-being of gender.


The brochure presented together with the National Directorate for Women's Rights, Equality and Gender Equality, also instructs the elimination of the discrimination against women, the promotion of substantive equality in day-to-day practice.


Article 18 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women obliges member states to periodically submit reports on measures taken to make the provisions of the Convention effective, as well as on progress made.
