We are celebrating the International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day (#INWED20) takes place on 23 June this year as usual.

We have compiled a short list of the most outstanding women engineers in the world.

Isabel dos Santos is an Angolan engineer and Africa's richest woman.

In 2013, according to Forbes, her net worth had exceeded US$2 billion making her Africa's first female US dollar billionaire.

Sofonie Dala is an Angolan engineer

She will be the first woman to build a blended and e-learning platform for out of school women, girls and disabled children in Angola.

Angola does not have any distance learning systems. As a result of covid-19 pandemic, the academic year in Angola was canceled. But Sofonie wrote a research paper about the implementation of e-learning schools in Angola last year before the emerge of coronavirus.

Hedy Lamarr was an engineer

  • She devised a method of encrypting signals to prevent enemy spies listening to sensitive information, the underlying method of how we use Wi-Fi today.
  • Without Hedy Lamarr, there would be no wireless communication in our modern world.

International Women in Engineering Day is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focuses attention on the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry.

It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world.

Background

National Women in Engineering Day was launched for the first time in the UK on 23 June 2014 by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary. Since that launch in 2014 the day has grown enormously over the subsequent years to the point where it received UNESCO patronage in 2016. In 2017, National Women in Engineering Day became international for the first time due to the interest and enthusiasm developed by the international audience and participants in the previous years.

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) was born to allow the celebration of women in engineering to become global.

For 2018 we want to encourage all groups (Governmental, educational, corporate, Professional Engineering Institutions, individuals and other organisations) to organise their own events in support of the day, and link them together for maximum impact through the use of the INWED logo/campaign, corresponding website, and supporting resources.
